Mine were 1 and 3 last year and dh was working a bajillion hours so leaving wasn't always an option. For the 3 year old sometimes is try having her hold onto the back of the cart, which she loves or having her help with the grocery list, with the last thing on the list being ice cream. The 3 year old usually wasn't the problem though but if she was a bit whiney or dragging her feet it made dealing with the 1 year old a lot harder. I'm at a loss for the 15 - 20 month age, mine just kinda were completely unreasonable at that age. So at times it was just holding my crying 1 year old at check out while telling my 3 year old to stop dilly dallying. I donno, we made it through, there were a handful of embarrassing times out of a lot of shopping trips. I'd talk to them when we got home or say obv you guys are tired and have nap/bed time and try and give them a pep talk before trips.

We just leave. Granted we are just at 15 months so not in full toddler mode yet, but when DS was was deep into colic and I once left a full cart in the checkout line at Costco with an employee after apologizing profusely and just walked out. DH and are unified on that front. We've bailed at restaurants, family gatherings, church, wherever. DS hits a certain wail level and we are gone. But we have yet to encounter an errand that couldn't be done later and schedule everything around our sons schedule.

If DH is out with me one of us will take him to the car and he can finish his tantrum in the car. If it is an errand that can wait, we go home. DS threw a tantrum once while we were grocery shopping (I was by myself) and it was horrible. Luckily we were in the checkout line and I was able to placate him with my phone.

The most recent tantrum happened in Target. It was horrible. People were staring as I carried him kicking and screaming out the door. I was not in a good place by the time we got to the car. When we got home everyone had a time out.

ETA: Just realized I offered absolutely no advice. Just commiseration!

That's tough!! Honestly, when it gets that bad and I really need to get stuff done, and you can't placate them with food/drinks, I pull out my phone and let them watch a show. (Wishenpoof is free on Amazon Prime ;-) ). It may not be the "best" solution, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Today the girls and I (1 and 3) went out to run some errands with my mom, so I had an extra set of hands to help me out. They are usually pretty well behaved when we go out but today was a total nightmare. I had to walk away at one point and leave my mom to handle it because I needed a few minutes. They were screaming and whining and complaining literally every 5 seconds. Ok, I know, kids are kids but this was so bad people were staring. We had to run these errands so just going home wasn't an option. I was really at a loss as to what to do and my mom was actually stumped as well. Like I said, they don't act like this all the time while we are out, the usually have a decent time but today I think they were tired/hungry. I brought a snack but that didn't help much today.

I'm curious how you handle tantrums/not listening etc in public. If we were at a restaurant I think we would have went outside. Any tips for next time?
