I was not a fan of babywearing all day. I get tired and hot easily, and baby can get hot too. When we lived in NYC, we had a Maclaren and I would often take the baby carrier with me so that I could switch as necessary. The DC metro is really clean and accessible compared to most, so I don't think you'll have many problems. Just try to avoid rush hour. As for it being loud, I would just cover my LO's ears with my hands when the train was arriving in the station.

I take baby and stroller on transit all the time. I also babywear all the time. I think all day is a long time for a baby not used to a lot of wearing.
I'd work up longer and longer walks to see if she's comfortable.
When you're both ready, bring a backpack with outfit changes for you both, god forbid there's a blow out while you're wearing. A blanket so you can put her down.
At four months she will probably not be having any solids so that's easy. Bottles might get heavy. I don't know anything about bottles though.
No need for ear protection. Honestly DC Metro is way nicer than 99% of the world subways.
For long days I bring the stroller and a carrier. I don't like being in the same position all day, why would baby.

I was never comfortable babywearing all day, but I gave kind of a bad back. Personally I'd get a stroller that's light and easy to fold, like the City mini. You can either put baby in it, or use it as your pack mule.

I'd suggest doing a few short trips, building up your strength / babies tolerance. I also have a breastfeeding necklace I wear sometimes for her to play with if she gets bored.

She loves the bus she just looks at people until she falls asleep. If you're doing a front carry I'd suggest a backpack for all your stuff!

My babe is only 4weeks but we already have had a few NYC subway and bus baby wearing adventures. He is happy in the Becca or woven wrap until he needs to nurse. So really a few hours. My back gets tired, but that's because I am still getting my strength back pp.

My experience with other older babies is similar, but they were all already used to spending time in the carrier.

I would start with some longer, but more local trips so you can get a feel for how you both do and it will still be easy to bail and head home if needed.

I have also taken older babies on the subway and bus in a macclaren quest. I never go in the elevators if I can help it, they are so dirty. I carry the baby in the stroller for short stairs and fold it for escalators and the bus. Really not so bad as long as you have a diaper bag that's easy to carry too (backpack).

I would suggest a backpack for longer baby wearing excursions too.

Good luck! And happy adventuring!

Hey everyone! Per your excellent recommendations, I returned my Lillebaby and bought a Beco Gemini! I am IN LOVE. Thank you all!!

My next big question involves public transportation, all day walking, a four month old, and babywearing comfortably. I live in DC and I don't drive or have a partner. I have a huge list of places I want to take my baby to via metro this summer, starting next week, and I've never taken her on public transport before. I am so terrified.

Do you ladies have any tips for all day babywearing on public transportation (including long walks)? How do you stay comfortable, how do you help a 4 month old stay comfortable? What clothes should you wear/bring, how do you haul what you need if you bottlefeed and feed solids, etc? My baby hasn't been on any extended walks in the Beco and I'm afraid she might get really uncomfy.

I want to bring my stroller (I'll be going during working hours on weekdays), but the elevator situation is pretty bad sometimes and I'm terrified i'll have to fold it up and carry my baby and navigate escalators. Plus the nightmare of taking it on a bus!

Also, our metro is SUPER loud and horrible, like high pitched grinding sounds underground and awful overhead speakers/conductors who talk at a deafening level. I bought a pair of earmuffs that are made to muffle loud sounds and protect a baby's hearing. Would any of you use them, or do you not mind?

I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you all <3
