Walmart sells mum mums too.

I didn't start puffs until 12 months, FWIW.

@artbee: Oh that is interesting! I'm the same way about wanting to listen to the doctor. If you decide to go with cheecha puffs you get the best of both worlds...listening to the doctor and LO get's a puff experience :)

@anbanan15: We never told our doctor that though- he just gave us a sheet of all the foods LO shouldn't eat until she's 1. They give it to all their patients. Thanks for letting me know about cheecha puffs- I'll feel more comfortable listening to my doctor.... even though I'm sure normal puffs wouldn't hurt LO.

@artbee: I bet that's why! If you really want LO to have the puff experience what about freeze dried fruit of Cheecha puffs (made from potatoes)? I've heard wonderful things about them for intolerant babies and they melt on contact just like a puff would!

@anbanan15: I think he suggested waiting because of allergies. I have a food sensitivity to wheat, but not an intolerance. I still eat it all the time, Hubby also went gluten free to see if he'd feel better (he has crohns) and it didn't make enough of a difference for him to stay off it. LO has only had rice and she's fine with that.

@artbee: A call to the pedi wouldn't hurt. It could just be an older way of thinking. I believe (I could be wrong) that they revamped the recommendations for introducing many of the allergenic foods a few years ago. I believe the recommendations have changed to anywhere from 6-12 months for introduction of wheat.

There is also some research out there suggesting waiting to introduce certain foods until after 12 months of age helps to reduce the risk of developing allergies/intolerance to them. Maybe that's why he suggested waiting? Does your family have a history of wheat/gluten intolerance or celiac disease? How is your LO on other grains?

I wonder why my doctor said no to that. I'll have to call- I don't want my LO to miss out on those easy finger foods like puffs and toast.

Really? We never worried about wheat at all. And we certainly gave LO bread products really early on.

My pediatrician didn't say anything about wheat, so we give puffs, bread, and cereal. So far my LO is okay. Is your doctor concerned about LO developing celiac disease maybe?

oh and to add, our pediatrician suggest starting wheat at 7 or 8 months, not 12, so theyre all different.

yes, at 6 months. Liv is 7 months now and eats those, mum mums, and she even eats toast. I think 12 months for wheat is cautious, and I have a gluten intolerance. I really wouldnt worry about it, but thats just me. I also give her meat already (at 7 months.) I just avoi the really allergenic foods like egg whites, shellfish/fish, peanuts, etc.

My doctor gave us a "Do not feed your baby until her 1st birthday" list and wheat was on it. I've heard a lot about puffs and mum mums, but since I couldn't find mum mum's at our grocery store I bought puffs. Of course I was in a rush and didn't look at the ingrediants. But when I got home I noticed there are wheat in them- even though it says on the box it's ok for crawlers.

Do/did you give your LO puffs or any wheat before their first birthday?
