I read on a britax forum that you can't wash the straps or put the cover in the washing machine.

We took ours apart and hosed it off in the driveway, then let everything line dry over night. I think DH used dawn dish detergent to hand wash.

My car smelled worse than the carseat, so we left the windows open over night, too.

We had to wash the plastic part (and use Clorox wipes) twice FWIW. There are lots of nooks and crannies. Retch.

@CupQuakeWalk: I washed on the "hand wash" machine setting in cold water and it is air drying. I will look for my Clorox! :-)

@autumnlove: I washed our pavilion cover in Arm&Hammer detergent and it all came right now. I wiped the straps down with water and detergent mix (again arm & hammer). I wiped the body down with some Clorox wipes. I then let it sit out in the garage overnight before putting it in my car because I think the small, closed car would've made it worse.
Anyway---the smelled worse than the seat even though the seat got the bulk of it:( all went away within a few days.

:bummed: you're not supposed to soak the straps, it can compromise their strength in a crash. I've heard setting it out in the sun can help.

We let our car seat air out mostly or maybe we get used to the smell. The manual says not to machine wash the cover so we did once rinse it with the hose and air dry like it said.

How did you get the smell out?!?

I threw the Britax cover into the washing machine and I hosed off the rest of the seat. I wiped down the hard parts with Bac out but it still reeks....

Maybe I need to douse it with Lysol or sun it out?
