This might sound silly, but sometimes babies get push and pull confused. She might be quite hungry and wanting to get closer to the breast but is accidentally pulling away because she is too young to control her actions accurately! Try calming her before trying again or offering a half ounce at the bottle so she's less hungry then nurse again?

Ah yes, my LO does this too, off and on. I usually try to make him relatch a few times and do a compression. He also sometimes gets really voracious and whips his head back and forth - I think because he wants it to flow faster.

I'm not sure if this is flow preference or not, but most of the time he's fine. He seems to only do this if he's having a fussy moment (or day, lol!).

@ldh112: do you have a lacatation consultant you can consult? Or perhaps a local WIC office so you can do a weighed nursing session to see how much is being transferred? Always remember there is absolutely nothing wrong with supplementing! You are doing a great job!!

@ldh112: at one point i was convinced people were crazy that this was best but it gets better and you have to find your own individual groove with baby. you'll find it, don't stress, mama! :heart:

@rosegold @sapphire

thanks, ladies :) it's been a really emotional experience trying to EBF only to have a lot of issues I've mentioned elsewhere on the boards. Supplementing wasn't easy to accept but its been the best for us and I just feel like I can't handle more hiccups with BF at the moment. It's nice to have some support here :)

Keep doing what you're doing and try not to question the weird moments too much. Babies are unpredictable. Could have just been tired, also you're hitting the peak crying/fussy weeks. I doubt it has much to do with BF per se. Hang in there!

Both of my guys had their growth spurts around 7 or 8 weeks. Every baby is different.

@rosegold: yeah, she's had a bottle since 2 weeks, just more so recently since getting a better routine established with knowing how often to try to supplement. I am hoping she stays open to both the breast and the bottle :)

@MrsRcCar: She is 7 weeks tomorrow. I didn't really notice the 6 week growth spurt people have seemed to dread. My pediatrician sort of scoffed at the idea of being able to assign growth spurts specifically to certain weeks for all babies. Maybe its starting late?

my guy liked the speedier flow of a bottle nipple and would do the same. they get used to the difference, i honestly believe, but we did have a few days where i felt like I was constantly offering my boob, putting it away and trying again within the following 10 min.

We've had a good few days around here - I am continuing to supplement 1-3 oz after offering the breast for a good 30-45 minutes based on her transferring around 1 oz in weighted feeds. She is 7 weeks tomorrow. She has seemed content with this routine and put on some good weight finally- it has felt like a small victory with all the BF drama I've had in the past few weeks.

However, this afternoon at her 5:15pm feeding and then again after 7pm, she was really frantic at my breasts and pulled off really frustrated. I could manually express milk from both breasts which made me think she should be able to access it but she just seemed over it after 5-10 minutes both times I attempted nursing. I wasn't questioning my supply lately, but this has me a little concerned.

I feel like I am hydrated and have eaten pretty well today... I haven't taken my More Milk Plus in a few days, nor have I had lactation cookies which I had made a couple times per a friend's recipe (they were basically peanut butter, maple syrup, oats, and almonds... no brewer's yeast so I didn't really know if they were making a difference other than contributing to no more lbs coming off lately :P)

It has me a little worried that she is maybe preferring the bottle all of a sudden? This hasn't happened yet (I use slow flow Born Free). Could she just be having an off night? It is the witching hour time but she hasn't really done this before. She did seem more hungry today, eating closer to every 2 hours compared to 2.5/3 hrs- I wasn't sure if it was growth spurt related and maybe I just am not producing enough or my supply is just low today? Should I get a scale for home use? So many questions, I know... I just am hopeful to keep up our nursing relationship and got a little freaked out... we'll see how nursing goes later/tomorrow.
