I just ordered the alcohol test strips. I'm so happy to have found that, I was worried about having drinks and then breastfeeding!

Exactly what ohapostrophe said. Alcohol doesnt just sit in your breastmilk, it cycles through it just like with your blood. As the content in you blood decreases, it does in your milk as well. My LC, my pedi 9from Europe, so very BF educated) and my OB all told me the same thing with that. Pumping and dumping wont rid it from your BM quicker, but it will help with engorgement. buy the test strips if you want to be positive.

A friend of mine has a super abundance of milk, and had to pump and dump when she went to a rally with her hubs and had several drinks. She literally had to pump right then, and there wasn't enough time for the alcohol to leave her system. In cases like this, it's probably recommended to dump the milk. To me, formula is probably better than breastmilk after 4 beers.

When the alcohol leaves your system it leaves your breastmilk too... so you don't have to pump and dump unless you are uncomfortable/engorged. When you're feeling back to normal your milk is fine!
My lactation consultant has always said that a couple of alcoholic beverages per week are fine and not to even worry about the timing. Only if you exceed that do you need to avoid bf'ing.

I used the alcohol test strips whenever I would drink:

http://www.amazon.com/Milkscreen-Home-Detect-Alcohol-Breast/dp/B0018LRDIM/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1322236941&sr=1-1

And there were a couple of nights of heavy drinking where I had to pump and dump a lot!

If it's really heavy drinking then you'd have to pump and dump. There are alcohol test strips for your breast milk. You should get those so you can test to make sure that there is no alcohol left in your system.

My OB said that if I time it perfectly, I can enjoy a glass of wine in the evening without having to pump and dump, which I suppose is true if I put LO down at 6:30pm and she doesn't wake for a feeding for 6-7 hours.

But what about a night of heavy drinking? I will be attending a function and I plan to drink - not crazy heavily but enough for me to HAVE to pump and dump.

How much do I have to pump and dump to cover a night of drinking?
