At our BFing class, the instructor said alcohol clears the milk at the same rate it clears your bloodstream, so approximately 1 drink per hour. Everyone metabolizes a bit differently, though, so that's just an estimate. It doesn't really correlate to feeling drunk or buzzed because if you have a higher tolerance, you could easily have one drink and not even notice but still have alcohol in your bloodstream and milk.

As I understand it, you pump and dump when you are drinking and are missing a feeding.

Ok good. We went out to dinner last night and I got pretty buzzed for the first time in over a year! (3 glasses of wine over 5 hours, ha). C did me a huge favor and slept until 5 am again so I didn't have to use pumped milk, made sure I felt fine in the morning, and I fed her. Woohoo.

Yep! I always waited since the alcohol metabolises through milk the same way it does with blood. I'd just stay up til an hour or two after my last drink, then pump and go to sleep. When in doubt I used one of those alcohol test strips... Milk screen, I think they're called.

As far as I know pumping and dumping is kind of a myth/pointless endeavor, for the reasons you said, it's not like you get rid of the alcohol by doing it. I might do it if I was super engorged in the motn and was really uncomfortable. Otherwise I wouldn't.

Nope, you got it. You only need to pump and dump if you get uncomfortably engorged.

Question about pumping and dumping. The way I understand it, once you no longer feel drunk/buzzed, there is no longer alcohol in your milk, the way there is no alcohol level in your blood. So you wouldn't feed the baby while you feel buzzed, but a few hours later you'd be fine. So, why bother pumping off the milk? Why not just wait until you are sober?

I can see that there might be times when you'd have to, like before bed when you had nursed for hours or whatever, but usually I feed Lo right before bed and then can go until morning anyway (if she sleeps that long). So if I went out and had a few glasses of wine at dinner, I wouldn't nurse her during the motn feed but would just wait and feed her with very full breasts in the morning.

Am I missing something?
