Our daycare provides whole milk, but during the transition, I sent cups of a mix of breast milk and whole milk until he was fully on whole milk (or hemp milk for my oldest).

I bottle-weaned first and then made the switch to whole milk (or hemp milk).

Our daycare provides whole milk. They give it at breakfast and lunch. I have no idea how much they really pour, but the recommended ounces is 11-15 oz. We give him milk when he first wakes up and sometimes with dinner.

After 1 she just got like 8 oz of cows milk after waking up and before bed in a straw cup so we never brought anything to daycare.

We switched to BM in a cup first and then started mixing BM and CM. After we had finished the switch we started looking at how much he was really drinking during the day and decreased the volume a bit.

@kiddosc: @pachamama: Thank you, that doesn't sound too bad! Hopefully it goes smoothly for us as well. Introducing water and food went pretty well, so fingers crossed for milk.

@MrsSCB: we just dropped a breastmilk bottle and substituted a very small amount of whole milk. After like 2 weeks of that, we dropped another BM. Now at 17m he has 7oz in the morning WCM and 6oz WCM with daycare. He did great, no fussing at all.

With both of my kids I did cold turkey to whole milk in sippy cups at 1. They both adjusted fine within a few days. I continued to nurse them morning and night and they had a good diet outside of their milk intake, so I was never too concerned with how much milk they drink.

Also, my daughter was very much like your son in limiting her own milk intake. By the time I made the switch to WCM, she was really only drinking about 6oz of BM and they were sending a full bottle home at the end of every day. She just refused to drink any more.

@nanilani: oh yeah, not limiting on purpose at this point. He is just more interested in food than milk lately and doesn't always finish his bottles. She said that's normal and some kids make that switch on their own earlier than others.

@MrsSCB: I'd guess it's probably still early for your LO to need a limit on milk (I'm not a doctor, trust your ped over me!), but you're right on the general principle of milk/food balance. I'll admit to not holding hard and fast on the 2c limit for our 20 month old every day :)

@T.H.O.U.: @nanilani: thank you, I was thinking mixing the two might make sense so he can get used to the taste!

@nanilani: that's good to know there ought be a limit. My pedi did say recently that it's normal for their milk intake (BM, formula, whstever) to start to decrease as they eat more food, and that's been the case for us. So makes sense!

I think we kept sending roughly the same amount but with different proportions of WCM and BM until it was all WCM. At some point I believe the recommendation for toddlers is to keep it under 2c of WCM a day so they don't fill up on liquid calories. We were able to keep nursing at home once or twice a day for a few months after I stopped pumping until LO was over it.

@MrsSCB: Talk to daycare first to ask about them providing milk and their policy on how long they want kids to have the bottle.

You have a couple of options (went through this with my older two).

- You can start doing a gradual mix of BM and WCM in the bottles and slowly decreasing the amount of BM so he gets used to the taste of WCM. Then put just the WCM in the sippy cup.

- Go straight to BM in bottles and WCM in sippy cups. Start now because it takes them a while to get used to something other than water coming out of the sippy cup.

- Mix option of the two. Really anything goes!

@T.H.O.U.: I haven't asked -- I didn't know some daycares provide milk. I'm not sure about the bottles -- he's pretty decent with the sippy for water, though. I don't put breast milk in it because I don't want to waste a drop 😂

Our daycare provides whole milk. However we are going to transition her to hemp milk so we will send that. Have you asked them what their policy is? How long will they give a bottle?

My son is just about 11 months. I plan to stop pumping at a year, and I'm starting to think about how that transition will work. If your kids drank whole milk, did you just send sippy cups of milk to daycare? How much? Right now he's drinking 10-12 oz of breast milk at daycare, divided between three bottles. Would I send the same amount? We will BF at home still, but I am SO ready to say goodbye to the pump!
