I just got back from a two day business trip. On my return flight going through security, I just pulled my cooler bags out of my pump bag and placed them on the belt in a separate bin. I didn't even remove the ice bags from them. Security didn't even check them, but they did search my suitcase and confiscate my toothpaste because it was oversized. Go figure.

@cheert16: You can also carry freezer packs through security if you want to bring those. They have to be frozen and not liquid when you carry through security or else they will make you toss them. I had to throw mine out once  Otherwise, I second all the ladies above.

i pumped and stored in bags, and refrigerated them (i didn't freeze them because i didn't want them to thaw on the trip home, in which case i'd have to use them up in 24 hours). i brought a little cooler bag and layered the bags with 3 or 4 ice packs for the return trip. i didn't travel by plane, but my friend (who told me about this method) said she didn't have a problem going through security.

No issue with it through security. It is considered a medical liquid and even if your baby isn't with you, you can carry it through. When you scan your bags, obviously be up front and tell them you have it. You don't even have to say "breastmilk" if you don't want to.

I would pump and store in the fridge (on the coldest setting while in the hotel). Then I would use the ice machine before leaving and pack up a strong plastic cooler with lots of ice in gallon bags. If I only had a bottle or two, I would use the bottles but usually the pump bags work fine. Make sure they are surrounded completely by a lot of ice.

Once you are through security (they may have you pull it out of the ice) you can ask the food vendors for ice if you want to pack fresh ice before getting on the plane.

@LemonLong: thanks for responding! Did they give you any issues with it not frozen? (Brining it through security?)

I always used bags because they are easier to pack, I froze what I could (sometimes the mini fridges have a little freezer section or I would use the freezer in the fridges at the office). I used an insulated lunch bag and some ice packs to hold everything. I never had issues with the frozen milk in security, but I preferred to check it because I think the cargo space is kept cooler.

I am headin to Chicago for a work conference in October for a weekend. I am goin to have to pump while I am gone- how do I transport my milk back home? I know there is a fridge in the hotel room- but not sure there is a freezer. I wasn't planning on checking a bag and carrying my pump/ cooler- can I bring my milk on the plane? Should I transport it in bags or bottles? Any ideas/ suggestions are appreciated!
