@MrsADS: I basically just tried to endure as much as possible while being careful about clogs. I basically found that if I hand expressed I could find relief without expelling as much milk. Because I was trying to decrease my supply I didn't want to pump too much. But there was a lot of choking for the first two months while I got my oversupply under control.

And I also used ice packs and cold cabbage in my bra to relieve some pain. Plus hot showers. It was a stressful couple of months and I went though a ton of breast pads. It's tough to figure out because you want to solve the problem but you're in pain and your baby is in pain. A lot of it for me was just trying to endure. Also, on the block feeding - I often would feed DD from one side for like 6-8 hours (so like three or four feedings). And my other side would be super hard and painful but that kept DD's poops normal and not green and painful. As long as I wasn't getting clogs and DD had normal looking poops, I tried to endure the pain of engorgement as much as possible. It was rough! So you definitely have my sympathy!

I usually do some block feeding as well, again to keep DS from spitting up and being a reflux machine from getting so much milk. For those of you who do that, what do you do about the side you are not feeding on? I get so painfully engorged, like hard as a rock, and then when it is time to feed him on that side, I still have to pump beforehand (the reflux) and I can pump 6 plus oz just on that side before feeding him.

@tofuwad that sounds like about what I get pumping in the middle of the night.

Block feeding was the only thing that helped me with this.

I had a pretty bad oversupply and what i started doing was pumping both sides to empty right after I put LO down for the night (and honestly the first time I did it I pumped something like 12oz!!!). That helped me a ton with overnight engorgement. I had also been block feeding at that point because my LO was very gassy with green poops. So my breasts were used to going four or five hours between feedings because I was feeding from one side only.

And honestly, my daughter is now 13 weeks and is waking up 3+ times a night to feed so I haven't woken up engorged in awhile.

I was in exactly the same boat. I tried to pump only enough to take the edge off but it was always around 6 ounces before I could let DS nurse at night without him getting barfing from all the imbalanced milk. I took a sedated every night before going to bed so that I could at least get a couple of hours before I woke up soaked. Honestly, it did not get better until I went back to work at 5 months. Something about being away from DS during the day finally cut my supply, but I am still, at 10 months, sometimes wake up too engorged to sleep. I still have to take the sudafed or I wake up in pain, but it's so much better than before.

FWIW, this issue resolved itself for me between 3 and 4 months, although mine was milder.

@MrsADS: I would starting timing how long that takes, and cut down little by little. I commiserate with you though--I don't have a massive oversupply, but I get painfully engorged at night when LO goes more than 2 hours, and I end up spraying milk everywhere when she tries to nurse!

@hilsy85 that's an idea. Although I don't really pump for a certain amount of time, I go based on how my breasts feel (I stop when they feel less engorged), although I go a little longer on the side I'm going to feed DS on so he doesn't get all foremilk.

@hilsy85 I think it would take me an hour to express enough to be more comfortable.... I try to just pump to that point but then I wake up 2 hrs later and it's just as bad again.

DS is 2 months old. I have been dealing with an oversupply ever since he was born, it's a little better but I'm still a milk factory. He only nurses on one side per feeding.

Anyway, he's occasionally going longer stretches at night now, like 4 or 5 hours, and I am so painfully engorged during the night, like I feel like I have milk up to my chin. I have been pumping at night (1 to 2 tInes a night depending how full I am when I go to bed) to relieve the engorgement but i know the more I pump, the more milk I make!

DS also has pretty bad reflux and it makes him pretty gassy and uncomfortable if I nurse him when I'm really engorged since he only gets foremilk. Not to mention that he doesn't come close to emptying the breast. When I'm really engorged at night I need to pump 4+ oz before he could get close to emptying that side.

I am up enough with him at night, I feel like I'm losing a lot more sleep pumping! Anyone have a simular situation?
