I always only pump for 7 mins. My pediatrician told me theres realy no benefit to pumping for long periods of time, so I stop at 7 and usually the bottles are full by then anyway

@winniebee: Yep, I put it on before and after. Liv loved the taste of it, so sometimes Id put it on before nursing. It helps a lot during pumping. You dont get the friction. I dont use it anymore (she is almost a year old and we're still at it) but I used it religiously until my nipples stopped being sore. Im actually going to get Lauren some of their stuff so she has it before baby comes =o) I swear by all of EMAB's stuff!

@winniebee: They say to pump for 20 for 2 reasons. 1-your baby is much more efficient at draining the breast, so if he nurses for 10 imnutes, he might get out what would take you 20 to pump. And 2-it fools your body into thinking the baby wants to nurse more, so it helps with supply. Id say I stopped pumping for 20 minutes around like 8 weeks, it was just too long even though I was only doing it twice a day or so. Also, try ordering some Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter and use that while you pump. Its safe for the baby to ingest, but helps keep things lubricated. I found that if I put that on my whole nipple (areola included.) it would help output a tiny bit.

@krsmall: Same! It's like he hears the pump and knows to start chirping! The worst is the middle of the night when I put him back down and he's drowsy and quiet and ready to go back to sleep but starts fussing loudly when I start pumping!

@yin: Thanks! That's a good point. Right now I do make an excess for LO but will need to up my production further if I want to do this long term since right now I pump usually 3-4 ounces and then 5-6 when I do longer stretches (ie, overnight). LO takes only 3 oz right now.

I used to get the majority of my milk in the first 5 mins too, but I would pump for 20 to get a couple of letdowns and a good amount of hind milk.

Oh, and I swear the LO knows when I'm pumping. He will be fine and then I start pumping and he becomes fussy.

I was religiously pumping for 20 minutes, but DH is back at work now and it's so hard to find the time to pump for that long, so I now aim to pump for 10 - 15 minutes.

I was in the same position (also exclusively pumped for a year) and opted to drop down to 10 minutes per pump for my sanity. While I was able to pump enough for my LO, a month or two later I tried to extend my time to see if it really did make a difference. Sure enough I was producing much more. Even though you don't seem to make much during those last 10 minutes, by pumping longer you are telling your body that you need more milk overall. You may still get dribbles during the last half of your session, but you should see an increase in production.

If you have any questions about exclusively pumping, feel free to ask me.

You can also try turning it off for a minute and starting it again for another letdown.

@betsyboop: interesting - I always run it on medium setting but maybe should try it lower. I have a second very short letdown that I don't feel but it happens at like 10 mins...then I just feel like I'm abusing my nipples for the next 10 mins!

Have you tried upping the power just a bit after the first 10 min? I usually keep it close to the lowest setting and almost always experience a second letdown at around 18 min. But if that doesnt happen, i'll turn up the dial and that does the trick!
I always pump for 20 min.

I get virtually all of my milk within the first 5 mins of pumping. In 10 minutes I have some more dibbles (maybe 1/3 oz). In the next 10 mins all I get are dribbles. So, it's tempting to only pump for 10 mins even though everything I've read says to pump for 20 mins. In exclusively pumping an 20 mins every 3 hours is so time consuming, but I want to promote further production since LO is only 7 wks.

Any thoughts on whether piling for 20 mins is really necessary. It also takes a toll on the nipples!
