Yeah, that seems really odd to me too, she should try warm showers, warm compresses, and a supportive non-underwire bra, but pumping would be a really bad idea, and will actually only make the engorgement worse, not better, because pumping tells her body to make more milk!

wow never heard of this except in cases where the mom got pregnant while still breastfeeding her first child.

Yikes! Glad I wasn't the only one who thought it was weird. I'll have to go back on there and see if anyone suggested contacting the OB.

One of my friends started lactating at a crazy early stage of like 12 weeks, but she had extenuating circumstances. She found herself unexpectedly pregnant and hadn't stopped breastfeeding her son that long before finding out. She was under orders not to do anything to stimulate her nipples for fear of bringing on early contractions, which cause real problems when she ended up with a blocked duct.

She should not pump without consulting an OB/GYN! Nipple stimulation, like that from pumping, can induce labor and at 23 weeks she would not want that.

I didn't think it was possible for your milk to come in that early but I don't know much about it. I'd be majorly ticked off!

oh and she should NOT pump-- I'm thinking that kind of stimulation could trigger contractions and lead to early labor...??

Whoa! That sounds crazy impossible. Maybe her breasts are just super tender and getting larger and she's mistaking it for engorgement.

I was reading a story on another board about a woman who is having problems at 23 weeks because her breasts are extremely engorged and painful. She was asking if she should start pumping already!? Is it possible to have your milk come in that early? This is her first child.

Did anyone else have this happen to them?
