I work in an open office with 2 to 3 other people and a door that opens onto the street. I pump at my desk under a cover. I sometimes pump when there are other people in the office if I know them. With my first I would go into the other room (but still not private) and it was in a way even more award. I have pumped on amtrak, airplanes, under the table at an event, at the tech table during rehearsal for shows I was designing and in so many dressing rooms. I've decided that I can't be bothered to hide. But I work in a very welcoming community,

If there are too many people using the room, I think you can make the argument that they need to provide additional space. I'm a lawyer and another nursing mother lawyer and I were having issues with the joint use of our "mother's room" as a "meditation room" (aka private phone room for young males or so it seemed) and she sent a strongly worded email to the facilities coordinator that we were not be adequately accommodated and within an hour, new signage was put up, emails went out about the modified use, etc. I think it is worth an ask as to whether a secondary space can be made available to you.

@peachykeen: I was always very weird about where I pumped. I basically avoided pumping at work as much as possible because I was weirded out by the hygiene issues and privacy. So I personally would not be able to pump in a cube. Does your sliding door lock?

I'd do it, mainly for the reason that I could then get work done while pumping, get in my hours, and leave on time. Not sure how your workplace handles this, but if you have to clock out to pump in the lactation room, pumping at your desk could allow you to keep working. Especially early on, I felt like every minute at work was one away from my baby.

I have no shame, so yes, I'd totally do that if it were not convenient for me to get to the lactation room. I would probably try to work into that schedule, but if it didn't work out (either as a whole, or on certain days), I'd just go for it at my desk.

But I'm also the person who will pump just about anywhere with a nursing cover overtop :silly: By the 3rd kid, my boobs seem like the least sexual thing ever, so I could give a crap whether people are thinking about them! haha.

I would. I have a Freestyle and I've pumped everywhere with it wearing a big hoodie zipup sweater of my husband's over the top. It's not the quietest pump but it's not that bad. I like the Rumina pump and nurse tanks bc I can just slip the flanges directly into it and pump away.

100% yes. I wouldn’t care if people heard my pump. Not like it’s an annoying sound, just that they’d be knowing I was pumping/thinking about my boobs. but I’m guessing most of your co workers know you have a newborn and there’s a good chance you’re nursing! I had a freemie which would have been great for this situation.

I would, pumping on your schedule is so much better. As long as the noise is not a problem for others. I pumped in my office for over a year, I had a frosted glass door that I put wrapping paper over to ensure no one could see in. A complete security violation but it made my time at work much easier.

I work for the government. We have 5 ft cube walls and I have a door. No one could hear my spectra. It wasn't my first choice, but it was a 10 minute walk to the lactation room and I was pressed for time. More frequently I booked a conference room or an office if my boss was in a meeting. I was of the mindset that you do what you need to do

I would definitely consider pumping in my cubicle! Especially since the pumping room sounds like a logistical nightmare. I am pretty open about my body/breastfeeding etc though (probably because I am a nurse and work with breastfeeding/pumping every day in NICU).

So, for context I do work in public health so most people are aware of/supportive of pumping moms (we even have a diabetic who checks her blood sugar during team meetings). I agree that more space is needed but we're short on office space already and it's government so I know that's not super likely in the near future.

I'll definitely run the idea by my supervisor but my main concern is alienating colleagues. However, the walls are taller than me and there's only a tiny gap where the door meets the wall that I could cover with a scarf/blanket. They do pipe white noise into the big open room and I don't think my Spectra makes much noise but hard to say for sure until I try it I guess. It sure would be convenient not having to pump on someone else's schedule and get work done at the same time, but I plan to at least try out the pumping room for the first few days to see how it works.

Thanks for your feedback!

There’s no way I’d pump in a cubicle. Even if it had a door. Cubicle walls are thin and pumps tend to be loud. I would not want people hearing me pump and thinking about my boobs. Plus I can imagine it would make people uncomfortable. You also don’t know when someone might drop by. Then what do you? I could just see some 25 year old clueless male co-worker knocking on my cube, not understanding what the noise is. And then you say what, I’m busy go away?

I would consider it considering the high walls and frosted glass door. It sounds like your work is a professional place with an HR person to whom you could complain if anyone made you feel uncomfortable about pumping in your own "office". Put a nice "do not disturb" sign on your door or even one of those special "i'm pumping" type signs I've seen on etsy. Set your pump on the carpeted ground, or on a top of a stack of papers on your desk and it shouldn't make too much noise. I'm a super modest, conservative person, but I'd definitely consider doing this. Good luck!!

@peachykeen: I definitely wouldn’t pump in my cube. But high walls and a frosted door make it sound almost office like. Can people look down into your cube?

I assume noise would be a factor but a whole department could hear me pump from inside my designated pumping room so they might just have to deal with that.

Has anyone pumped in their cubicle at work? I'm heading back to work in a week after having #2 and I'm considering it for convenience. I worked for the same organization when pumping for #1 but we've since moved buildings and there's only 1 lactation room for a lot of pumping moms. Currently there are 2 women signed up for each pumping slot - one uses the provided hospital-grade pump and the other has to use her own individual pump. The room is 4 floors down and I'll be pumping 3x a day.

Technically I have access to this lactation room and will be worked into the schedule. However, given that my cube has high walls and a frosted glass sliding door, am I crazy for considering this? Will my coworkers think this is super weird/inappropriate?
