@lawbee11: your post is what made me think of this question!

I'm not skilled enough at driving or pumping to attempt though. Also when I was working, I took the train...

i've only done it a handful of times, but yes i would set up before driving and stop the pump when done. I managed to switch everything to the other boob between a few red lights once. And when i am done completely, i use one hand to slowly unhook everything and cover myself. the challenge is making sure the milk didn't spill! in some instances, it was easier to stay hooked up.

I would put on my hands free bra before leaving and hook up in the parking lot. I wouldn't use a cover though, simply because I enjoyed imagining the face of the cop who might pull me over. A woman pumping is just not one of those things you can unsee:)

@anagram: best thing ever!

@cheert16: I guess it's necessary to have sort of hands free bra? Or could I somehow make my own? I am totally wanting to do this when I go back to work in march. Pumping while driving would be a lifesaver.

@lawbee11: so those in your other thread and am disappointed they don't work with medela swing :(

I have an hour long commute and when I was pumping-I pumped on the way to work (after daycare drop off) and on the way home- only having to actually pump at work twice. I would put on my hands free before I left work- when I got into the car I would put on the flanges and attach the tubes (I just pulled my shirt down over everything) then when I hit a specific spot I would start the pump. I would be finished just as I pulled in my driveway- detach, etc and head into the house! The first time is nerve wracking- but after that its a lifesaver. I pumped WAY longer because of pumping in the car- and using that time to multitask.

I have done it in a pinch, when I couldn't get two pumping sessions in at work, but it's not super comfortable so I don't want to make it part of my routine!

If I need to pump during my commute, I normally put my pumping bra on before leaving my office and then set up in the parking lot before leaving. I turn it off after 15-20 mins and stay connected.

I share a driveway with neighbors...haven't ever run into an issue with that, but I think that's part of my hesitation to make it a part of my routine! What if I need to disconnect everything and my neighbor is out back when I get home!?

I need to pump in the car a couple of times when I take a day trip without LO next week. I plan to pull over to do it though and will allow time to do so because doing it whilst driving sounds tricky!

@Anagram: you had the best autocorrect ever: your poops felt like they were exploding. Thanks for a great MOTN laugh!

I'm really wanting to master pumping while driving because I commute 1-1.5 hours each way! I only have a single pump which will make things trickier, but there are lots of places for me to stop and disconnect/reconnect.

@Foodnerd81: I pump in the car almost every day driving home from work now, so that I only have to pump once at work (I have an hour long commute).

I work in a middle school, so I definitely can not risk showing any skin whatsoever in the parking lot, just in case (god forbid) a student would be walking through the parking lot for some reason. or a parent. or whoever.

So before I leave, I go into a storage room in the library and put my hands free bra on under my clothes. Then, in the car I actually leave the school parking lot and drive to the highway. There's this one really looooooong light in the middle of nowhere that I always have to sit at, and THERE I put the flanges in and hook up the pump. I just pull up my shirt.

I always put on this gigantic scarf I have in the car for this purpose, and then I drive. I just turn off the pump after 25-30 minutes, but I keep everything attached until I pull into our parking garage. There I don't care if I flash everything, because there's never anyone else around.

The first time I did it, I was SO uncomfortable and honestly...probably semi distracted while driving? I only did it because I had a hell day at work and never got a chance to pump, my poops felt like they were exploding, and I had an hour drive home. But then I was like......hey, this is super convenient.

Now I'm totally used to it and I don't think about it while driving at all.

I've done what @JoyfulKiwi: did, except I used a hands free bra that I set up before I start moving, and a nursing cover. If your drive is 20 minutes or greater it's a good use of time! As long as you don't need to really visualize your LO, you can probably hook yourself up and forget you're doing it.

I had those exact thoughts too when I first heard of it! But my commute is almost exactly the amount of time I spent pumping so I tried it - it was a lifesaver!

I set myself up in the driveway (flanges, etc) and threw my "cover" (a pashmina) over everything. I'd pump for 20 minutes, then shut my pump off (I chose a specific light on my commute for this task) and finish the drive connected. I'd carefully disengage everything, stow my parts in a bag and rinse when I got inside my building.

I never used a hands-free bra; I always just tucked the flanges into my regular bra - even when pumping at my desk. I wasn't ever too distracted, although I would double check my situation at stop lights :)

I see people posting about pumping while driving. Explain this to me. Do you get set up before you start driving (hands free bra, pump and flanges all connected) and just turn the pump on and go? Then what- after 20 min or so turn it off and drive the rest of the way connected but not pumping?

I don't drive or pump very frequently so this just sounds like a multitasking, distracted driving nightmare.

And do you throw a cover over? I can't imagine looking over on the highway and seeing someone with the flanges and bottles hanging off their chest... Though now if I did I'd be pretty impressed.
