I have an Ameda Purely Yours that I got through insurance. No complaints...I really like it! 10.5 months and going strong EBF.

I have two Ameda Purely Yours breast pumps. They work well for me. Right now I'm using the older one (purchased from a friend) because I dropped the one from my insurance and it's not working quite right. But before that, it was amazing.

@LatteLove: my Medela from insurance was called a personal double electric (or something like that), but it is the exact same as a PISA, just without the fancy black bag.

Loved my medela PISA and hated my ameda purely yours. I got nowhere near the same output with the ameda as with the PISA. I actually bought another PISA out of pocket and got rid of the ameda.

I've been EPing for 9.5 months and have enough to wean down now. I have only used the Medela PISA, and have never had any issues. I got mine through my insurance. (Side notes: I did not like the Medela hand pump- Harmony (I got it incase I needed it-it was a waste of $30). I used all Lansinoh or up&up bags, medela cleaning wipes, and Lansinoh pads until I bought reusable))

@LatteLove: I had both a Medela Freestyle and a Medela PISA---I much preferred the Freestyle and got more milk with it. The Medela has been collecting dust in my closet since I got the Freestyle.

I think everyone's boobs are different--my LC told me in front of an entire group of new moms that the Freestyle would ruin my supply because she'd "never seen it work for a woman before". And here I am, still exclusively pumping at 11.5 months. =)

Thank you ladies! The insurance options are different from what I"m finding on the Medela and Ameda websites. Do any of your have experience with the insurance-covered models?

i had the ameda purely yours which i liked, with a caveat. i liked it because it's a closed system so you can hand it down if you so choose. the part i didn't like was that it had more parts to clean than the medela--i fixed that by macgyvering the medela parts onto the ameda, but that's just me. also, i've heard that even with the open systems, there are ways of opening and cleaning them if you want to pass them on. i would go with the medela or ameda--those are the best known brands.

p.s. i did *not* like ameda storage bags. i got 100 of them with my insurance and did not like a single one of them.

I originally had a Freestyle and it broke after just a few days of use. I was devastated, thought my milk had dried up, eventually ended up at a lactation consultant and renting a hospital grade for a couple of months. Anyway she told me the PISA are the best she's seen, she said people would bring them in covered in duct tape, barely hanging together and still working great. They are tanks and I have been happy with mine.

Also - I believe most hospitals stock Medela hospital grade pumps. If you ask them to bring in the pump when you deliver, the lactation consultants can work with you on pumping as well as nursing, plus they will give you a set of parts that will work with your medela home pump so you will start with 2 sets.

I have Ameda (Purely Yours from my insurance) because I like that it is a closed system - there is a barrier between the flange and the tube so there's no condensation that can get in the tubes or motor and lead to a risk of mold. I like it and its ease of cleaning and that the knobs let you select exact suction/speed that you want. However, I have seen people say that the Ameda pump didn't work well for them and that the Medela is better at emptying the breasts and maintaining long-term supply. I haven't used the Medela other than a day in the hospital with hospital grade, so I really can't comment on differences in output.

I have an Ameda one (bc it was significantly cheaper) and loved it. Never had issues and is small enough that I just used a big purse to put my pumping stuff in for work. So all I had was my purse and a lunch/cooler bag.

Also I pumped for over a year so it got lots of use.

I just got information from my insurance company on which breast pumps are covered (I'm so glad someone told me about this option, and I called and found out!)

I have quite a few options and I'm not sure how to start comparing them, so I thought I'd start here.

The letter with the information I received from my insurance company has a really strict privacy policy so I'm not comfortable pasting the list of my options, but they include two models from Medela, and one by Mebby, one by Playtex and two by Ameda. (Not the Medela Freestyle, unfortunately)

It would be great to hear from pumping/breastfeeding moms on pumps they love!
