I pump after LO goes to bed (2-4 hours after her last feeding) and in the morning (only started that once she was STTN and only eating from one side in the am).

@MrsBeachyBaby: You can get fenugreek at GNC. I found that I had better luck with More Milk Plus by Motherlove. Those I ordered direct from their website

I agree with winniebee, if you pumped right after you fed him, you probably didn't have time to "recharge". What I like to do is feed him on one breast and pump on the other. That usually helps and I tend to get the most milk in the middle of the night. Don't forget, you're still in the early stages of breastfeeding so your body still needs time to produce a good supply of milk - it just takes time.

To get a decent amount of milk (at least a few oz), I would pump at least 2~3 hrs after feeding LO. Currently I am using setting 5 of 7, but I worked my way up. Around day 9, I was using a pretty low setting (prob 3?). It took a lot of time, pumping, MMP, fenugreek, etc to get to a place where I was getting more than a couple oz. good luck! :)

I was told 2am and first thing in the morning are the times when your body produces the most milk. They say it takes at least 15 min to properly empty the breast on a low setting. I always pump on the lowest setting since the higher settings destroy my nipples.

What kind of suction cups are you using? When I pumped using the soft cups that came with my hands free pump I barely got anything.
When I started pumping with the hard plastic suction cups (or whatever they're called) I started getting more milk..

Also, if you pumped after you fed your LO you probably won't get too much milk..

When my kids were 9 days old, I definitely was not pumping that much! For me, I find that early morning, like around midnight is when I get the most milk.

Did you pump after you fed him? That could be why you didn't get anything. Most woman produce most milk overnight or early morning. The general rule is to pump for 20 mins. Did you feel a let down while you pumped? If not, you could look at pics of your baby and massage your breasts to encourage a letdown.

I usually pump really late at night and/or early in the morning, or whenever E is taking a long nap. Sometimes I nurse him on one side and pump from the other....I can usually get 2oz from one side in about 5-10 minutes with an electric pump. I get the most in the early morning.

I just pumped for the first time today, so I'm no expert; but, I got 4.5 oz after about 15 minutes of pumping. I read your stores were highest in the middle of the night and so it was best to pump in the morning. I nursed DD at about 8am, she fell back asleep and so I went and pumped then.

Is there an optimal time to pump? I tried pumping yesterday and after like 20 mins i got barely a drop. My son is 9 days old and he poops like crazy and clearly gets plenty of milk. I know he got an ounce from one of my breasts in his pediatricians office because we weighed him after a feed. Is it possible I am just pumping when my stores are low? How long does one usually pump in order to get an ounce of milk? Does the setting you put it on matter? Thank you.
