when I'm pumping (at work or home) I listen to a video of my DD - for whatever reason that really helps my let down.
I also recently figured out that I get more milk pumped when I drink water during pumping... go figure.

Once last thing, I use to get the most pumped between 2-5am. It sucked getting up at 3am, but that way I was always ahead in milk and my boobs were just so ready to give it up!! Maybe that would be worth it for a few days to get a small stash going.

Good luck!!

Thanks for all your responses! I was going to buy new membranes but figured I’d try to hand express first. I got LO to get the letdown going first then expressed. I almost got two ounces from one side! So relieved bc when we went out yesterday I tried to get baby to take ready to feed and he didn’t really drink it.

I would try to have express or the manual pump. It can be hard to get a let down with the pump if your body isn't used to it. I have to get in the right mindset when I pump, it's hard to explain but makes a huge difference.

@mrsrain: @periwinklebee: my money's on the membranes too! I've had times when I was pumping, and felt suction and everything, but wasn't getting any milk. Usually I'd shut down each side of the pump in turn, and one of them turned out to work but the other one would not. And then I'd get home and swap out a membrane on the bad side, and that one would start working too.

I also wonder if a manual pump might work better, if you have one. They take longer of course, but for me at least, it feels less like a horrible mechanical annoyance.

Maybe try a hand pump? Smell an item of your baby? Visualize baby to try to encourage a letdown?

Check your membranes, I was at a breastfeeding class today and the instructor said that if you aren't getting anything at all, the most likely cause is that a damaged membrane means the pump isn't able to provide any effective suction.

Maybe a bad membrane? If it’s got even a tiny hole it would prevent enough suction for pumping to effective...

@2littlepumpkins: He’s had ready to feed before but it’s been a long time. I have one 5oz bag of BM frozen so hopefully that’ll help if he refuses the ready to feed. I think he’s just used to the breast because it’s just been at least a couple months since we gave him a bottle. When I have him a bottle of breast milk he took it much better than the ready to feed though. Thanks for the link! I’ll check it out!

@waterbaby: I’ve tried pumping in the morning and still nothing...

What time were you trying to pump? I would get the most milk at 5 am. Enough for 2 bottles...

* I was pumping for work though

@MsBAM: so weird. I dunno about the pumping but neither of my kids would take the ready to feed formula either, and when they did it didn't seem to quite agree with them like the powder so if the pumping doesn't happen then that may help, as well as experimenting with a different bottle type.

Oh and I don't have first hand experience on this but I remember seeing someone on here post about those suction kind of bottles that can collect milk from one breast while baby nurses on the other? I don't remember what they're called, or if that's an option, but I know it was on amazon.

Good luck!

@justjules: Glad to know I’m not alone!!! Now just hope he’ll take the formula when I’m gone. I tried to give him a ready to feed yesterday in a bottle to test if he’d take it. He drank less than an ounce and seemed to be playing with the nipple more than drinking!

@lilyofthewest: I probably did go too long since my last pump but didn’t realize that would be an issue. As far as feeding him on one side and pumping on the other, probably would be too difficult for me bc my LO is super squirmy and loves to pull the wires too lol.

I had a tough time getting a letdown for the pump after long stretches where I was exclusively nursing. Can you pump one side while baby feeds the other? It doesn't solve the pump problem...but it works around it really well.

This happened to me! But for me, I only pumped a few times in the first few months (maybe like 10x total- but always got a lot of milk.) stopped just because it was easier for me to exclusively breast feed, E was gaining good amounts, then tried to pump again for a bottle to go out at night around 6-7months and NOTHING. I continued to nurse for another year but for some reason could not pump. I don’t know why

Hi,

So I exclusively pumped for the first 6 weeks of LO’s life then started breastfeeding. I had no problems pumping at all. LO is 6mo now and in preparation for a night out, I’ve been trying to pump and literally getting NOTHING... I tried to pump two different days. I’m going to have to give him formula when I’m out. Anyone know why I’m literally pumping nothing? Not even a drop! I know some people don’t respond well to pumps but I expected something. My supply is fine and LO breastfeeds well. Flang size is fine, I’m using the same size flang as I was when I pumped the first 6 weeks, so I can’t see that that would be an issue.
