If he's getting about 3.5 ounces per feed then you should be fine with 10oz. Unless he's eating crazy often? Maybe grandma is misreading other cues as hungry cues? The rule of thumb is an ounce an hour or so. 15 sounds like an awful lot.

Nothing new to add, really, but try eating lots of oatmeal and avocado and adding a before-bed pump. Also, any chance you could squeeze in a few mins of pumping after that morning feed? I ended up having to do that, and while I hated it, it really got us through.

I think he's being over fed. In 7 hours, I'd expect mine to eat 7-10 oz in that time period personally. Maybe ask her to do paced feeding and on an every 2.5-3 hour schedule and see how he does? Leave backup milk just in case, but really encourage her to try to stay at 10 oz.

I'm gone 7-3 and my 8 month old 21 pound son eats about 8-12 oz. But some days less! Then he nurses a lot at home with me. My belief is babies know best how much they need to eat and will get what they need from you!

My girl typically eats 16 oz in an 8 hour day. our schedule is a little funky, and she's often getting that last bottle around 4 or 4:30. I pick up at 5:30 or so. I only pump 9-10 oz during the workday. I'm still doing an overnight pump (whenever I wake up with full breasts) and usually get 4-6 with that. All that said, I burned through an 80 oz freezer stash in about 2 months. Now, I send whatever I've pumped and she gets formula for the rest. I usually works out to 12 oz BM and 4 oz formula.

You can try adding a before bed pump. That was how I was able to keep up with my milk loving boy and only pumping 1-2 times a day at work. I did this even days I was home and was able to build up a nice freezer stash.

My son ate 3 5-6 oz bottles while I was away approximately 9 hours so I think your child is eating a reasonable amount (as long as he isn't spitting up).

@kayla0416: I think I'm pumping less than he normally eats, because I can only pump 1-2 times in a 6 to 7 hour period because of my work schedule. @Adira: My son eats around 8am before I leave for work... He's at home with my mom 2 days a week and I don't think the feedings are very scheduled, just when he seems hungry. I think he's getting around 3.5 oz per feeding.

I'm thinking about trying to squeeze in extra pumping during the week, I'm just dreading it.

Thanks for your responses!

What time is your son eating before you leave? And what time is he getting bottles and how much?

Both my boys took 15 oz while I was gone, but that was 7:00 to 5:00. They got a 5 oz bottle every 3 hours. I would nurse at 6:00, they'd get bottles at 9:00, 12:00, and 3:00, and then we'd nurse again around 6:00 p.m.

How does his intake/schedule at daycare compare with you at home on the weekends?

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I think that your son is being overfed. I have a 4.5 month old daughter and when she first went to daycare I was unsure how much breastmilk to leave for her while she's there so I asked on a FB mom's group I'm a part of and someone recommended this article that I found extremely helpful. http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/milkcalc/

My daughter is at daycare from about 7:30-4:30 and she has about 11-12 oz during that time. I've found that when she's drinking from a bottle, she will suck and suck til the bottle's gone no matter how much is in it, and will always be upset for a few seconds when it's gone. At first this led me to believe that she was still hungry. So sometimes I'd feed her more and she would always drink it all but end up spitting up large amounts shortly after. I've done weighted feeds at my local lactation group and found that she usually only eats 3-4 oz per feed and seems satisfied after that amount from the breast.

On weekends or other days off does he only breastfeed and seem satisfied after eating, or do you supplement at home too? If he seems satisfied after eating from the breast, I think he would be ok eating just what you pump while away from him. Unless you have reason to believe your pump output is drastically less than what he would eat from you on a typical day at home.

ETA: my daughter has 3 bottles at daycare of about 3.5-4 oz each at approx. 9:30, 12, and 2:30. She then breastfeeds at about 5 and 7 and sleeps 8-10 hours straight after that (has done about 7-8+ hours straight at night since 2.5 months old).

@AnnabelleG: I'm in the same boat! I'm gone from 7:30 to 5:30. My daughter used to eat like 12 ounces in that period, and I could keep up just fine and actually had a little freezer stash.

With my now 4 month old son, I was so proud of myself for having a freezer stash of 60 ounces when I went back to work. Well he burned through the entire stash in a month! I pump about 12 ounces during 3 pumping sessions, and he eats 20 ounces (!!!). The tradeoff of his eating so much is that he sleeps a pretty long stretch at night. I contemplated getting up to pump at night, but I really need my sleep.

He gets 12 ounces pumped milk and 8 ounces formula on days he's away from me. On the days we're together I've only supplemented a couple times. Usually he's fine just nursing.

I think that's a normal amount for him to eat. I couldn't pump enough for my daughter so we've been supplementing 1-2 bottles of formula at daycare. People seem to have had good luck increasing supply with supplements, oatmeal, increasing water, etc. but I never did.

I think that's an okay/normal amount considering he probably eats every 3 hours.

I just went back to work a couple of weeks ago. My LO is just over 4m old. With my first son, he barely ate while I was away, and then evened out to eating just what I'd been able to pump. My 2nd is eating so much while I'm gone, I can't keep up. Yesterday I was gone from 8:30am-3:30pm and he consumed 15 oz. That seems like a lot, what do others think? I'm all for him drinking as much breastmilk as he wants, but I'm worried I won't be able to keep up my supply! I only was able to pump 10oz yesterday, that's a pretty big deficit...

Thanks in advance!
