@Sammyfab: I do exactly the same thing: pump for 15 minutes but keep going if there's a lot of flow at that time. I don't go over 20 minutes though.

15 minutes is tough for me. I think I get one let down but if I go 18-21 minutes I can get that second let down. Someone told me (I think on here) that the milk should be "spraying" out, if its just dripping, you can probably stop.

It depends. If I am about to leave for work or about to sleep then I pump until the milk stops coming steadily because I know I wont get to pump for several hours since I dont pump at night or at work. But if I am just home on the weekend i usually only pump for about 7-9 minutes and then I stop.

I kind of follow 2 rules. When I start pumping I aim to pump for 15 minutes. If there is still a good flow at 15 minutes then I will keep going until it's a super slow trickle (like 1 drop every few sucks). I have the Medela PIS that has the 2 speeds/types of suction and I might rotate through them a couple of times to stimulate another letdown.

How long do you usually pump for? I was told by the lactation consultant in the hospital to pump for 15 minutes to increase my supply. Usually, I'll "dry out" before the 15 minutes is up, but I keep going anyway. But now, I've been going for 25+ minutes and the milk is still coming! I think I'll stop soon since it's 4am.

How do you determine when to stop pumping?
