@pinkcupcake: Thanks - that is good to know! We are pulling out all the stops but the increase has only been modest so far... how long did it take you to establish a good supply?

@MamaMoose: I pump anywhere from 1 oz to 2.5 oz if I haven't nursed first. It depends on how recently I nursed/pumped, though it is more consistently on the higher side since I have started taking herbs/eating lactation cookies. I pump twice in a row instead of nursing at night to measure my output as recommended by my LC (and it makes night feedings quicker & easier).

@edelweiss: It is exhausting! So far we are still having to supplement, and my pumping output is not enough for the supplements so we have to top off with formula. I imagine once I can start storing milk I would be more than ready to back off the pumping sessions!

@septca: Good to know! I am using a hospital grade pump - I was useless with a manual!

@daniellemybelle: I had good luck increasing my supply by using my manual pump for a few minutes after each nursing session for 2-3 days. Basically, if I had really low output during a week at work, I would do this all weekend. I would barely get anything from the pump, but the next week my supply would be up again. I have had to do this 3-4 times over the last 9.5 months and am still able to pump enough to leave for my baby (although she only gets 8-9 ounces during the day now).

@daniellemybelle: when i first started pumping after nursing to help increase my supply (starting day 5 after LO was born), .75 to 1 oz was my output as well. it is exhausting pumping after every or almost every nursing session. i slavishly did it for at least a month, to the point where i was pumping about 6 oz after every nursing session. in retrospect this was unnecessary, but i had no idea when i was supposed to stop pumping--by that time it's like my boobs had a life of their own and in their new life, they were firefighters hosing down fires with milk. a few weeks of pumping after nursing would have sufficed. although i did build up a good freezer stash.

@daniellemybelle: How much are you pumping if you do so not right after nursing?

@daniellemybelle: hi! I didn't get your reply notification! My supply did increase permanently, so I stopped taking supplements and dropped extra pumping sessions around month 4 I think. I was worried it would decrease again but thankfully it did not and I always made more than enough milk :) hope this helps!!

Good to know! @mrsjyw: @pinkcupcake: @Adira: All of you spoke in past tense... Did your output ever increase? This is barely enough to contribute to her supplements & it's very time consuming & exhausting!

If pumping after nursing that sounds normal.

Totally normal!!! I got anywhere from 0.5 oz to 1 oz about an hour after nursing, so it sounds like what you're getting is normal!

And for what it's worth, at 8 months, I'm still nursing and am able to provide enough milk for Xander at daycare, so it sounds like you're doing great! :)

Yes, that sounds normal! I used to get like half an ounce after nursing.

I had severe bleeding after my delivery and my milk didn't come in for almost a week. If you're looking to increase your supply, I would suggest using More Milk Plus, fenugreek, & blessed thistle. The combination of those three (plus pumping religiously) really boosted my milk supply!

That sounds about the same as me. If DS efficiently drains my boobs, I'll get less than an ounce from each boob. Sometimes, it's nothing at all!

I finally got a hospital grade pump that works a lot better than my Ameda. I am trying to pump after most BFing sessions now to drain my breasts & hopefully increase my supply. So far, I only get about 3/4 oz -1 oz out of both breasts combined in a 20 minute session. I know I don't have a great supply because we've had to supplement with formula, but I'm just wondering if this is a typical output after nursing?
