I pumped in the morning until about 4 months but now that she is older (7 months) & sleeping longer stretches, I pump both sides about 2 hours after she goes to bed/right before I go to bed & I have enough to last more than an entire weekend if needed.

Thanks for your help, everyone! Since I only feed him from one side at a time, I pumped the other side this morning and wound up getting 7 oz. I'm not really worried about how much breastmilk I have on hand, so I'll probably stick with that for now.

LO feeds both sides always, so in the morning and I pump right after and get about an ounce. I nurse her to sleep at 830, and I pump before I head to bed in the evening at 930-10 and get usually 2 ounces. DH also gives her a bottle for her feed in the middle of the night, so I pump then as well and get about 4 oz. She takes 5 oz for her night feed, so I use the morning pump, and the night pump for her bottle every day. And the evening pump for extra. It takes a couple days to get enough for an extra feed, but it's worth it.

It took a while to finally figure out how to pump, but to have milk for DD too! She's 12 weeks this week.

I also had an oversupply for a while so I would pump any time I was feeling extra full. We also introduced a bottle around 2-3 weeks ifI remember correctly so I would pump any time DH would give LO a bottle. I would pump about twice the amount LO took in a bottle at that time so half would go into the fridge for the next day's bottle and half would go into a freezer bag. I never added an extra pumping session in addition to my normal nursing because I didn't want to make my oversupply even worse.

I never had an oversupply, but when I do pump I usually do it about an hour or so after her morning feed, while she is napping. She takes both sides at every feeding. You could also pump while Dh gives her the bottle.

I used to pump after his first morning feed and just before I went to bed. That helped build up my stash without taking time away from the baby (I never could figure out how to pump while watching him).

I stayed home for 13 months. I pumped in the morning after her first feed (usually when she napped) and again in the evening after she went to bed. Now that I've stopped pumping we've been using my freezer stash for her before-bed bottle.

LO only eats on one side and has since he was about 2ish weeks old. Starting around 2 weeks I would pump on the side he didn't eat on when we first woke up in the morning (usually around 6-7am). I haven't been pumping in the mornings the past week (LO is 6 weeks) because he isn't falling asleep right after nursing like he was for the past month. I have a lot of milk in the freezer so I'm not terribly worried.

DH also feeds him a bottle once a day (usually before bed) so I also pump when he's feeding him a bottle, but that is taking the place of a feeding vs. building up a stash.

@gilmoregirl: Not terribly. It didn't take long for my supply to adjust. The key is just doing it at the same time. I think there are few people that don't experience some discomfort in the adjustment period. It will pass as you get into a routine.

I also had oversupply issues but I HAD to pump whichever side LO didn't eat in the morning because otherwise I'd be uncomfortable and she'd have latch issues for the rest of the day. Deflating it in the morning meant a much happier day for both of us! I usually got about 5 extra ounces by doing that. I'd keep it in the fridge that day in case it was needed, then freeze and replace it the following morning with the new milk.

If DH just wanted to give a bottle, I'd pump a little while before I thought LO would be hungry and he'd just use the fresh milk so it didn't usually need to be warmed (or if it did, it was really quick). BM can stay out for a couple hours, and she was eating so frequently I knew it would get used quickly.

@Weagle: Were you engorged in the mornings? I've been thinking I should pump one side in the AM, but I've been painfully engorged since my baby started sleeping longer stretches. I'm afraid I'm going to make it worse.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips! Any other thoughts are appreciated. I'm probably overthinking this a bit.

In the beginning I pumped for oversupply. Then I just pumped whenever DH was giving LO a bottle. We also had DH give one bottle/day.

ETA: I also just remembered that I pumped in the mornings too. LO only ate from one side in the morning, so I would pump the other. I ended up with a pretty huge stash!

I am going to return to work in either August or January (still TBD), but for now, I'm home for several months with my 4-week-old. We're basically never apart, so I haven't been pumping regularly.

I do have an oversupply, so I've pumped enough that I have probably 15 bags of frozen breastmilk when I've needed to relieve the engorgement (which is finally getting better - happens less often and is less painful).

I would like to have a bit of a stash so that I can be apart from my baby sometimes, in case something happens, etc. Plus, we want my husband to be able to feed our son a bottle a day so that he's used to the bottle.

All that to say...if you're home with your baby all the time, when do you pump? I'm not apart from him for any feedings, so I'm not sure when to do it. Not to mention -- I don't want to overstimulate extra production since my supply is finally starting to even out.

What do you do? Any advice for a clueless FTM?
