I used to do something like what @Truth Bombs: described, sitting cross legged on the couch. It worked well from like 3 to 6 months, after the floppy newborn days but before LO was super active while nursing. Once she got interested in messing with the pump we had to give it up.

@nanilani: Nope! It's pretty adjustable, so you can tighten it as much as you want. I'll lose suction if the bottle is pushing against something at a weird angle, but that's easily fixable. It's literally a length of elastic and a couple shoestrings and a bunch of adjustable clips (looks like it was made in somebody's garage) but it's cheap and it absolutely works great! And I find it gives better access for breast massage than a traditional pumping bra. And it's easy to put over any clothing. I bought two, one for home and one for work. I recommend it to everybody!

I couldn't ever figure this out either! But, I hated the boppy - I had small babies and it never worked well for me.

@JenGirl: That looks like it'd work perfectly! Some of the reviews mentioned that it doesn't tighten enough to create consistent suction -- have you had any problems with that?

Thank you all for the tips! Maybe I'll be ambitious enough to try it myself now that I know a little more about how it's done. I'll have to try an evening feed first when LO is more relaxed. He's quite the squirm worm during the day!

I only did it once but I was pretty proud of myself. I had her on the Brest friend, had my arm/ elbow under her head. Pump was already set up so once she was latched I held the flange up to the other breast with the arm that was holding her and turned on the pump with the other. Once it was on I held the bottle/ flange to my breast with that hand and held baby with the other. I had to turn the bottle a little sideways since I was doing cross cradle hold.

It's definitely not the most relaxing way to work but it was convenient to have fed her and pumped all within 15 minutes or so. She only nurses from one side at a time.

I sit criss cross on the ground and cradle LO on my lap. I use one hand to hold the pump on one side and the other to hold LO. It's tricky but manageable. I feel like I need a pic to demonstrate :silly:

I did this every night when they were still waking up to feed. I'd football hold them on one side, hold the pump on the other. Middle of the night feeds were some of my most lucrative! I think it was because one of the kids was nursing the other side, so it got production up.

@nanilani: I would just wear my nursing bra and pull down the side she is nursing on so I could still use the other side to pump hands free

I put LO on the boppy. Once I got her latched I didn't need both hands anymore (just one to make sure she didn't roll away) and I used the other one to hold the shield to my breast to pump.

Do people actually do that? I assumed people usually were referring to pumping immediately after nursing. To get your supply up, maybe try doing power pumps for a few evenings? (After LO goes to bed, pump for 20 min, rest for 10, then alternate 10 min on/off until an hour).

@Portboston: Interesting -- I haven't seen much about freemie cups before. I wish they weren't so expensive though :bummed:

I haven't used the football hold in a while, but that could possibly help keep LO out of the way. He's a wiggler when nursing though!

I have freemie cups so it would be MUCH more manageable to pump and feed. The only other way I can imagine doing it is with LO in the football hold.

ETA: I EBF so if I ever need to get some fresh milk I pump immediately after I nurse. It usually take a full day of doing this to get 4oz but Im sure if i did it on a regular basis I would be able to get more in one pump session.

Silly question: If you pump on one side while nursing on the other, how do you accomplish it? Do you have more than two hands??

I've seen various mentions of people nursing/pumping simultaneously, and I'd like to try it but I just can't fathom the logistics since my hands-free bra would block LO from nursing. LO's ped has him eating over 15oz/day at daycare to try to get him on the weight charts, and I just can't keep up pumping at work only. I'd like to squeeze in more pumps at home too so I can get my supply going again! Any suggestions?
