My mom checked a HUGE suitcase full of frozen homemade jam mini-jars for our wedding favors (125 jars), with ice packs and packing peanuts through two flights and one layover.

So, I agree with the checked-luggage idea. Easy for security, can hold more, and worth the $55 dollar fee (to me).

I traveled for a week once and pumped and saved all of it. I bought a insulated lunchbox and a bunch of those blue ice pack things. I froze the ice packs and the milk and then checked it! I don't know where you are flying to or from, but it gets COLD underneath the plane and since it is winter time it'll be cold on the tarmac too. I was AMAZED that I could use all the milk.

And, if you get home and it is a mess, then you tried! (that's what I thought at least)

I would at a minimum use the freezer at work to freeze what milk you pump in the office. Milk stays cold a long time when frozen, especially when you have many bags together to form one solid chunk. You could also freeze milk in the hotel if the hotel would allow you access to a freezer, but if that is too much hassle, you could just pump and dump. It would make me really sad to pump and dump the whole week, so that's what I would do. I have carried back several days worth of milk this way, frozen in a cooler. Good luck!

There is no way I would pump and dump!!! I have had several multi day trips and carried many ounces back with me on a plane. I brought s cooler with me and carried the milk home on ice and it was great.

I agree with others and pump and dump until the last day, then bring home what you pump on the last day and deal with the cooler and ice for the trip home. The milk will be good for about 8 hours, I think?

I would pump and dump except maybe the last day. You don't want to be hauling a week's worth of milk through the airport! Make it as stress free as possible.

As far as supply, spacing it out further should be ok, but you should probably pump a bit longer each time. The total number of minutes is more important than the number of times. I also wouldn't cut it by too many pumps, but again...don't stress too much! (I can imagine how hard it is!)

BTW - I've traveled with milk before and it was a breeze. I just alerted security that I was a nursing mom and traveling with breast milk. They were super nice and helpful. They tested each bottle (they waved something over it). It took a little extra time, but it wasn't bad at all.

I know its hard, but try not to stress. You will do great!

Hello! I went back to work at 10 weeks & travelled a ton. I have pumped in airport bathrooms, airplanes seats & toilets, gas stations and in rental cars. It is tough going but well worth it to keep up supply. In my experience its easiest pump and dump. Its just so stressful trying to keep track of the milk & keeping it cool. I would keep the milk you pump on the day you are heading home. The LC i worked with was good about sharing info on milk shelflife vs temp. Kellymom.com has a good table with info. I know its so upsetting to wipe your stash by not saving all you pump but it makes it much tougher to travel.
I found for me I could stretch out pumping sessions more often until i knew i had to pump or my boob would explode. It didnt seem to hurt me, i just pumped a bit more in the following days. Good luck!!

Call the hotel and see if you can get a fridge in your room. Explain you are a nursing mom and many hotels are able to accommodate. If not, you could get a soft sided cooler and fill with ice at night, then bring the milk to the office the next day and store in the office fridge.

Bringing the milk home is totally doable. Take all your pumped milk and put it in a soft sided cooler. You can get extra ice once you clear security from a food vendor.

Do the best you can with pumping while on the road. You can do it, it just takes a little extra planning.

Good luck!

My daughter is 13 weeks old and next week I need to leave her to travel for work. I'll be flying out Sunday afternoon and flying back home late Thursday night. This is going to completely wipe out the milk stash I've built.

Would you pump and save the milk while on the trip? Not sure of the logistics on how to do that. The hotel doesn't have fridges in the room, but I would have access to a fridge and freezer in the office I'm visiting. Would the milk stay good nrefridgerated on the plane? Its a 3 hour flight, plus time spent waiting in the airport Or should I not bother because it will be too hard to bring all the milk back on the plane? If I don't bring back any milk I will have to take Friday off since I won't have enough milk to send my LO to daycare. Which I have the ability to do, I just feel bad because I JUST came back from maternity leave.

Also, I'm going to be extremely busy while I'm there and be working pretty long hours, usually I pump or nurse every 3 hours during the day. If I space this out to every four or five hours for the week will it hurt my supply?

Ugh, I am already teary eyed thinking about leaving my LO for so long and worrying about the pumping is stressing me out!
