@katsupgirl: Thanks for the link, but we live abroad. But you gave me the idea to only allow her to use kiddie scissors, when she does manage to get back scissors. She slowly graduated to real scissors just a few months ago ... maybe it was too soon.

I would probably add some new rules to scissor use once she gets them back in a week. For instance she has to "check them out" from you and return them. She only gets them for set amount of time per day for a few weeks. All this to show sher she has demonstrate she ubderstands the overriding rules- cut only fabric and paper she is allowed to.

I would take them away. My DD lost her markers last week. I only buy washable but still. I have these scissors which pretty much only cut paper.

@erinbaderin: @Corduroy: I told her she can have scissors back when she proves she's responsible. She's had that same lecture before (when she wrote on her baby dolls) so she knows what responsible means. I took those away for a good 2 months.

@Anagram: Iron on patches. Brilliant! I never even thought of that! They were on sale leggings, so not so pricey, but I really like the lesson behind it.

Yeah, I would just put the scissors away somewhere, so she has to go through you to use them-and then only let her use scissors supervised. Her age is prime time for scissors silliness--tons of kids cut their own hair off at that age, playing "hair stylist".

As for the pants, I would look for the iron on patches, and have her help you patch the inside of the pants where she cut the hole--and teach her that when she makes a bad decision, she has to make it right.

She's playing cutting out clothes and she's experimenting cutting her own clothes? Seems like natural curiosity. Maybe you could take away the scissors for a while and then set up a special activity where you try cutting scraps of real fabric with sewing scissors together. Help make the distinction between making outfits (real and pretend) and making holes in her clothes. Or just take the scissors away because what I wrote sounds like a lot of work that might backfire anyway. :)

I would take the scissors away for a week, and tell her next time it happens you're taking the scissors away until she's 5. Tell her that if she isn't old enough to understand what she's allowed to cut and what she isn't then she isn't old enough to use scissors.

I just caught DD cutting her clothes. I didn't actually see her doing it, but the fact that the pants she was wearing was brand new and I mean literally brand new because I just asked her to try it on (a hour before) to see if it fits. She was quietly playing with her dolls and drawing them little outfits, cutting them out and taping them on. But when it was time to eat, I saw the obvious hole on her new pants. I asked her if it was an accident. She said she "didn't mean to", but I'm pretty sure it wasn't an accident. It's really frustrating because it's happened before!

The previous times, I would find one small hole and it looks like it's been stretched out by poking her finger through it. For the first two times, I gave her the benefit of the doubt because the clothes were older. But the third time this happened, it was more obvious that it was cut (barely nicked) by scissors. I lectured her then and reminded her about the rules about cutting things she's not supposed to cut.

Now that it's obvious she's cutting her clothes. I ended up taking her beloved scissors away and lecturing her. Is there anything else I should be doing? She's 4.5 yo and doesn't get allowance yet, so making her buy clothes isn't an option.
