@hummusgirl: Ah we are starting to do more natural consequences, the night time snack was one. He wasn't eating his dinner so we said well if you don't eat your dinner you can't have your night time snack which was about 2-3 hours after dinner. LO said fine! But when it came around he asked for his night time snack and reminded him of when he didn't eat his dinner... start meltdown... which took us a long time to manage. DH and I looked at each other and said never again! Haha.

I think the changing your mind idea is interesting! Maybe we will try that if we run into this again. Hopefully not but most likely we will make another dumb punishment.

My mistakes usually stem from not doing natural consequences, like when LO threw his food on the floor, I gave him a timeout instead of just ending the meal. We've gotten much better about this though and now natural consequences come more naturally. :-)

I also sometimes don't follow through if I decide it's a dumb idea. I just explain to LO that I changed my mind after thinking it over which I think is an ok lesson to teach, as long as it doesn't happen too often.

Anyone else make punishment mistakes?

Here are 3 of ours so far.

1.	Threatening to throw away a favorite toy – this was harsh and at the heat of a moment, I actually hid it away but I don’t plan to give it back anytime soon. Never doing this again… it was rough.
2.	Not giving night time snack - This was terrible… lots of crying about being hungry before bed, basically cried himself to sleep but I guess he didn’t need it because he didn’t wake up in the middle of the night for food!
3.	Toothpaste preference – LO likes one tooth paste more than another and we happen to have both of them… but he hates the other one and would refused to brush his teeth, and we implement the punishment we thought wow that was a dumb punishment because we want him to like brushing his teeth!

Well those are ours, you live and learn. We only implicated the punishment once before we thought okay never doing that again, but we had to follow through with it because you have to follow through with your threats.

Anyone else made a punishment they didn’t want to follow through but did anyways or when you did follow through you found out what a big mistake it was?
