I wonder why she's only paper training the dog indoors? Seems really odd to not have your dog potty outside. We just kept our puppy crated if she hadn't pottied recently. And the key is to catch them in the act and scold them so they make the connection.

@bunnylove08: I just ran outside with him and let him walk around on the leash for five min while I repeated our cue phrase. Have to bring your pee pad (soiled) with you and lay it down in the grass.

@bunnylove08: we got our last dog as a puppy and I would literally set a timer for whatever interval we were doing (I do think it was 30 min at first) to take her out. Good luck!

@bunnylove08: haha!

It took several hours, but once he had his first success (a few hours into it), there were still a few accidents (likely my fault because I lengthened the amount of time inside too quickly).

Every half hour was so hard!

@Mrs. Jacks: I hope so. I remember why I don't have a puppy and adult dogs are the way to go lol.

How long did it take for your dog to finally go outside with the pee pad?

This is why they are so cute so they are not eaten in the wild lol

@bunnylove08: just bring a used pee pad outside. He'll get it. We were able to get our new puppy off of pee pads and peeing outside in one day. He had like three accidents in the whole process... But you have to be all over them.

Our dog had never seen grass!

@Mrs. Jacks: I think he needs to have another dog show him how to potty outside. Every time he sniffs I say go pee pee and nothing. He will hold until we get home and he finally peed on the wee wee pad after we blocked him in the kitchen

Is the dog crate trained? If so, I would keep him in there unless you are direct 1:1 with him or he just peed. If not, then keep him on a leash tied to you at all times so he can't sneak off and pee anywhere. And then give him frequent (paper?) potty breaks. We trained all our dogs to go outside so no help with the inside potty situation. But the key is no opportunity to sneak to a rug and pee at all. Also I think if he's not trained, leaving him in the kitchen is totally fine!! It's just a short time.

When I'm potty training a dog, I keep them on a leash with me at all times in the house and take them out every 30 minutes until they go, then I'll space out pee breaks.

I always have treats on hand and always have a cue word "hurry up and go pee", whatever it is, so that the dog learns to go on command. I don't do pee pads in the house because rugs look a hell of a lot like pee pads to a puppy.

Best of luck! You are a good friend.

I think the dog is about 3-4 months old. My friend is new to the dog world. No she does not have any cues. Her dog has not showed us any cues and it seems he does it when we have our backs turned for a second. Yes my fault for having him have free reign in our apartment.

We had both our dogs give us verbal cues. They would whine and walk to us and back to the door when they needed to go. We had our dogs go outside from the beginning so I'm not so great with paper training since i think it's gross.

It could be that it's a new environment and I'm guessing the dog will have to stay in our kitchen :(

It might just be because he's in a new environment right now truthfully. How old is the puppy? Do you know if your friend trained the puppy to give any cues when he needs to go out? For example we trained our dog to hit the door knob when he needs to go out

I am puppy sitting my friend's new puppy. I live in an apartment complex so I do not have outdoor space. My family has had dogs before so I am familiar with dogs. We do not have any pets at the moment.

My friend's dog is paper trained and does not want to go outside. My friend brought her dog over and when she left my family and I took him out for about three hours. He did not go at all. When I brought him in, I fed him lunch and waited about 30 minutes and took him for another 30 minute walk and nothing. I put down his wee wee pad and had him stand on it and nothing. My family sat in the living room and he comes in and pees on my new rug. (Great and it's cream.) no worries I clean it up and put him on the paper. Nothing. He comes back in the room and falls asleep.

About 630 I give him my dinner and wait 30 minutes and took him for an hour walk. He sniffed every pee and poop spot and doesn't do anything. I bring him back and went to get my dd some juice and he goes into my bedroom and pees on my other new rug. I'm at a loss now. I clean it up take the pee paper towel and put it on the wee wee pad and brought him over there to have him smell it. I put his crate in the kitchen and I'm leaving him there for fear he will poop or pee on my rugs again.

Please tell me how I can encourage him to pee outside. I cannot just keep him in the kitchen. I also found out he never has gone to the bathroom outside
