@snowjewelz: 7...he is an odd ball! He NEVER even playedwith Bella, but definitely coexisted with her and missed her if she went to Vets or something, same with G he wants to protect her but really won't let her pet him or play fetch which she tries so hard to do with him :meh:
He will however let her feed him kibble by kibble and she likes that :)

@FaithFertility: How old is your other dog now?

My dog LOVED dog parks as a puppy but she is super anti-social once she got older. She can care less about other dogs... She only cares about squirrels and rabbits!

@caterw: Those are my fears! But I also think any new dog at anytime is a chance?! Who is to say a dog later will adapt to kids our house etc...

My dog is weird..lol Hates dog parks I think that is overwhelming!
He plays with my mom's dogs now and then!

I totally understand wanting your pup to have a companion, but... you have absolutely no guarantee that the new puppy (or rescue) will be able to adjust to to YOU in the time that you have. Dogs have personalities just like people, and asking a dog to get used to a new family and then add in a new baby a couple months after that is a lot to ask. Also, some dogs aren't a big fan of new babies. It wouldn't be fair to the dog to allow it to become part of your family, then realize the dog is baby-averse and have to give it up. I think it would be better to wait until all the people in the family have arrived and are settled before adding another pup into the mix.

In the meantime, could you take your dog to the dog park/ set up some puppy play dates/ take to puppy day care once or twice a week for some puppy friend time?

@FaithFertility: Aww, that's great! Haha, I only say that b/c when we got Penny, we were "just looking", and then I realized that there's never "just looking" :silly:

I think if you keep your eyes out, it is possible to get one before DS comes! But I'd say if you can't find one by like Aug, then maybe it's better to wait till next summer.

@FaithFertility: I have a newly turned four year old, a two year old and a six month old and we rescued an eleven week old puppy two weeks ago! I am of the mind that the more thr merrier and since our lives are already hectic it wouldn't make a difference. However, I do have her play at my mum's everyday with her puppy to get energy out. Since you already have a dog it seems like that won't be a problem for you. We went with a puppy because I wanted to be sure she would grow up with babies and be used to them right off the bat. She is a great fit! Very mellow and sweet. Good luck!

I totally understand what you're feeling; I'd feel the same way, BUT I'd wait. I believe both your dogs are older when G came along... I think we forget just how energetic puppies are! Even if they are well trained, I just remember what a crazy ball of energy my dog was and how much exercise she needed to not destroy the house (and you know she's not a big dog). I am totally taking it for granted how great she has been with G but it's absolutely due to her older age that she is just mellow!

If you can promise to not act impulsively, I'd go without G to the pounds and look around. There could be a miracle of a dog waiting for you, meaning it's young-ish, but house trained, and maybe they already assessed its energy level and it will be exactly what you're looking for! I got my dog when she was 5 months old... She seemed so sweet and docile at the foster home but when she came home and realized she was the only one, she went crazy lol!

I would go 100% insane if I had a puppy at the same time that I was adjusting to life with two kids. I would never have called my toddler easy as pie, but she was pretty good and easy before the baby was born. Since then she has been so much more difficult, and while my baby is actually pretty easy most of the time, she's still a baby and a lot of work. Don't underestimate how much harder two can be than one. (Not for everyone and maybe you will be lucky, though).

So for me, I'd wait until next summer. And then I would probably try to get an older puppy anyway. We adopted my dog when he was one. We were told he was crate trained but not housebroken, but surprise, he was actually housebroken too! Awesome surprise!

@FaithFertility: Awwwww  Yay. Rescue is my favorite word! (If you cant tell by my HB name)

We have 4 dogs. The youngest we ever took in was 1 1/2 yrs old. I actually prefer them a little older. They are more mellow, calm, and less needy. Which is nice in life right now with a young family and my husband whom deploys a lot. LOL

@FaithFertility: Maybe its worth it to just set your boundaries about what you are looking for (something between 4-8 months old, this size, these "breeds" etc). And just see whats out there.

I would wait.

I love my dog to pieces and had him long before having kids (we have 2). But it's so much work with two kids! I frequently find myself feeling bad that he doesn't get more attention.

I didn't vote. I have an "other"....
I think with an 18th mo and another on the way you have your hands pretty full. BUT, I also understand how hard it is to see your other pup lonely and in need of a buddy.
I would not get a puppy. That is just my opinion. Even with the summers off a puppy can take over a year to full train and mature.
I am a HUGE advocate of rescue. There are some pretty amazing dogs out there in need of a home. Some whom came from a home with other dogs and with kids. There is a dog out there that would fit in perfectly with your family.
I have fostered many dogs in my home. While having my LO and my 4 dogs. rescues are very good at determining the ones that will be good with other dogs and with kids. If they aren't sure. Usually they will say so.
The great thing about adopting a dog, well....there are so many great things about it IMO. But it will be less work. Puppies are a TON of work, and there are so many out there who are in need and would be so appreciative of a new home.
Out of the MANY fosters I have taken in, within 2 weeks we were over accidents and they were adjusted to our home and our schedule. I always tell people you need to give it at least two weeks.

Do you mean puppy now like literally right now? Also would it be a little puppy or just a young (under age 1) puppy from the pound? That would still only give you 30 days or so. I think a puppy that is 4 months old plus could train pretty well within 30 days. However, an 8 week old puppy really isn't mature enough to do a lot of training until they are closer to 12 weeks old which would be right when you're going back to work.

We lost our Big dog Bella a few months ago and both were not into getting another dog anytime soon...
Well I think our hearts feel other wise and well DD's Dog obsession doesn't help either, we do have another dog and he seems to miss a buddy too!
Here is the thing I have an 18 month old DD who is IMO easy as pie, I am 6 months pregnant with DS due in Oct
I know it sounds crazy to enter a puppy into our house but I am a teacher and off work until Aug 8th
WWYD?!
Just suck it up and get one now
Or wait until next Summer?
