Ear plugs! Just don't expect her to be toilet trained for quite a while. 7 weeks old is really tiny and it probably won't click for quite a while. Also with teething toys, a lot of the shops seem to sell soft rubbery things for teething but our pup liked hard plastic to teeth. And most of all lots of cuddles, or else what's the point?
P.s I expect some very cute pics soon

ETA: we did lots of bite inhibition training with ours, we would let her bite during play but if it was a tiny bit too hard, act injured, ours is deaf so we couldn't squeal too but apparently they learn even quicker if you do that. She is sooo gentle now.

I agree with making a vet appointment asap! Not sure about where you live but in my area, parvovirus runs rampant. I can't tell you how many little pups have gotten it when it is 99% preventable with proper vaccinations!

And as far as house training goes, positive reinforcement is the best! When my pup would try to start peeing in the house, I would make a loud noise and he would stop whatever he was doing. I would take him outside and he would finish his business. I would immediately praise and treat him. He was house trained in a few days :)

@BakerBee: crazy dog ladies, unite! That sounds like a good story--like a movie! My husband wasn't a dog lover when he met me, and my dog truthfully felt like he was crashing our party. He now loves dogs, and we talk about our dog all the time.

@MrsScottish: oh, raising a puppy with another dog is a whole different ball game--supposedly much easier! Do you have a spray, like Nature's Miracle, for accidents? A few good toys are good, like mentioned, and something to chew on when teething starts.

What kind of puppy are you getting?

Don't forget an ID tag and to make a vet appointment. It sounds like you are researching and are going to be more than ready.

Only other thing I could think of is a special toy or two for the new pup and the original one. Everybody needs to feel special!

If you don't have two leashes, you will definitely want a second one.

we have a 1.5 year old Shepard mix so the puppy wont be alone! I know 7 weeks is early, it is not ideal but it is a rescue. They are getting picked up today (all 10 puppies, and will be open to going home later this week, after vet check.)
We have already looked into puppy classes, and there is even a doggie day care close to my dh work that we can take her to during the day. Non of this can happen until she has all her shots though!
I went to the dollar store and got a $2 puppy collar, and we have a medium sized one our shepard mutt used when we got her at 6 months.

Thanks for the info @happygal! ANY useful ideas send them my way!!

Wine and ear plugs! Ha, I kid. Puppies are great but can be so much work. I have raised active German Shepherds though, so their energy and bite-ey-ness is a lot to handle.

7 weeks is a little earlier than normal to send a puppy home. Even one more week with litter mates teaches them so much. I would see if there are classes that would allow your pup to carefully socialize with other puppies so he can learn bite inhibition and good things like that.

You could purchase a light weight leash that is shorter, like 4 feet, and a puppy collar. Don't spend a lot of money on anything for a puppy b/c they grow fast and can chew stuff up.

You may also want to purchase a puppy book (I like the book by Dr. Sophia Yin) and think of a schedule for feeding and house breaking.

I am open about being crazy dog lady and can talk about this stuff at great length. Let me know if you have any questions! And do share pictures.

we have a wire kennel that has the adjustable separating wall. We can adjust it as she grows!

I also would make sure the kennel is not too large. If it is, he will just go in the corner.

I would recommend no pee pads. They have a scent that encourages dogs to pee on them.

OK bees, I need tips and advice from bees who have brought home a young puppy. I have not had one for 12 years (and then lived with my parents!!)
We are most likely rescuing a 7 week old puppy on Monday, going to see them tomorrow (eeek!!) Our current dog we rescued at 6 months and she was mostly house trained! I have been googling all week.

here is what we have done so far:
getting a collection of baby gates, plan is to lock it in the kitchen, place her kennel in the kitchen.
Cleared a spot for the kennel (have to get it out of the garage tomorrow)
bought some new cheap towels, have a package of pee pads to put in kennel incase
bought a new small bowl as it wont be able to reach the current one!!
Will buy food tomorrow when we find out what they are eating

what else!??!
