@FaithFertility: Hi, I'm just wondering what worked for you and didn't work for you as brought up your sweet puppy? We just got a puppy a couple of nights ago and I'm looking for tips and tricks.

My best tip from the puppy years is to mix cayenne pepper with water and use a basting brush to apply it to anything you don't want chewed up. I had a chewer, so I used this everywhere: on the underside of all my rugs, the stair spindles, you name it.

@PawPrints: ohhh so true about the snarling! Our older dog Owen will get up and move when he isn't into DD
I tell her he wants to be alone right now!
She is rather good about it!

My mum got a large breed puppy and trained her using the clicker and treat. She has trained two dogs from puppies that way and it was quite successful. She also has a bell strip hung on the door that the dog rings with her nose to go outside.

I agree with what people have said about messing with the dog's body and food. My friend had me so that with her dog when she trained him as a puppy. He was a small dog and she got me to put my hand in his food while he was eating and play with his head so he would be ready for kids. I only have a cat, but I do enforce (or try to) that he needs to be left alone while he eats and so does my mum's dog when we visit her because they might get grumpy, but for the times when just in case your children might get in their way, you don't want the dog to be aggressive.

And also what people said about the dog snarling is good to remember. My cat has upped at my daughter a few times to let her know he was cranky when she was bugging him too much. I would talk to both of them after the incident, but didn't blame the cat entirely because he was being antagonized. I don't have any specific training to follow because my mum just sort of goes with the flow. Was very careful and good about getting the crate training set up and established and I would definitely do that so that your dog has a safe haven from the kids. Most dogs really like their crates too. I would also set up the dog's toys and bed and teach your kids that those things are for the dog and not for them.

Good luck and enjoy! Your kids' ages aren't completely crazy. It will be work, but nice for them to grow up together. :).

Ask around in your local groups for recommendations for training places. You've got to sign up for puppy kindergarten, ideally one that uses clicker training. The classes will have the essential benefit of socialization, with puppies and with humans.

One other piece of advice I always give to people acquiring a new dog with small kids: be prepared that the dog may snarl at your kids on occasion. This is a normal part of how dogs communicate their discomfort with a situation. You can train the dog and teach the child to avoid that situation in the future (tell the child she isn't allowed to pull the dog's tail, tell the dog he isn't allowed to snap at the child, and if necessary start enforcing space between them). There are so, so many families who will rehome a dog for this predictable, expected behavior and it's not needed.

Definitely recommend clicker training. Patricia McConnell's Puppy Primer is really awesome; I highly recommend it! A very easy and quick guide. So helpful.

Get puppy used to you messing with his feet and ears from the start. Hold him on his back in your lap and just rub his belly, shake his paws, look at his nails and encourage him to relax in that position. It will make it loads easier when you need to trim his nails and do other grooming later!

Clicker training is awesome. Also take puppy classes that have puppy play groups- bite inhibition is so important to learn and there is only a short window to learn it!

Congrats!! We have a golden retriever puppy (just turned one) and the best tip I have is putting a bell on the door. My pup hits the bell on the door when he wants to go out to use the bathroom. It takes a little while and its best to start young!

Good luck and enjoy!!!

We are getting a puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, we may be a bit crazy! We have a 2.5yr old and 8 month old, but are ready and know what a puppy includes!

Please don't tell me we are nuts lol I know this already!

We will be crate training and such, but would like to hear other methods or tricks that worked for you when training a puppy!

The litter was born on July 1st and will be ready in 7-8 weeks.

We know the family.... they have 3 small children so these dogs/pups are around kids from the start, so I am happy about that!

We have had a puppy before same breed American bulldog/pit bull mix, so we are so excited!

Any tips/training styles to look into before we bring her home?

TIA!!!!
