I would give it a try. An extra week that you could just have to yourself sounds amazing!

If you find it is too much then you don’t have to do it the following year.

I always used to do this at a previous job to get from 2 weeks to 3 weeks PTO. Now I have 4.5 weeks at my current job and not sure if I would given the chance, but maybe since my current bank also has to cover sick time.

@Mommy Finger: ugh, I know. I wish our vacation looked more like Europes.... BUT, I have to say, the very large financial institution that I work for has really really been pushing its employees to take all of their time off, and most have 3-6 weeks of vacation time at least... and this year with covid they've given us all more time and are allowing us to carry over more days. I hope it's the trend in the US that companies start doing this.

In my group alone i'd say about 50% are now taking 2-3 week vacations at a single time, its refreshing to see.

I wouldn't only b/c I wouldn't have the need. I get total 28 PTO days plus 2 floating holidays/8 holidays. We can only roll over 3 days. Honestly, it's a struggle to take all 30 of my PTO plus floating. DH is billable so while he gets PTO days, it doesn't really matter b/c he ends up having to make up the work just to maintain the same level of hours needed to meet his annual targets.

I hate the working culture of this country.

hmm, that's tough. I guess it depends on what you're planning on... We've started taking 2-3 weeks of vacation at one time the past few years, and we have found being able to take that larger chunk of time at once is very valuable to our feeling re-charged and like we really had a vacation.... so I guess I would lean towards yes since I do believe in the mental health value of having time off.

My company has a PTO buying program and I’ve participated every year buying 3-5 days. However, we allow rollover (you can bank up to a cap max amount) and I’ve never used my full bank. It’s just really nice peace of mind that if I need it, I have it. And if I end up with far too much one year I can cash out a week (but that hasn’t happened).

They’re discontinuing the benefit this year though, so I am glad to have “bought” in the past to have a nice cushion saved. Definitely depends on the amount and rollover options if I would keep buying though.

@gotkimchi: I would be all for it because my first thought was ooh, a week home alone with no kids or husband! I’d love to get paid a bit for that. Hopefully you wouldn’t have to use it on a school closure! 🤪

DH works in travel and due to industry struggles there’s not going to be much opportunity to get raises and such, bonuses will be limited, but they increased his vacation 3 weeks and it feels like a good tradeoff right now if he can actually use it. Different than what you are looking at, but point being time off feels really valuable to me at this stage of life (despite it being unlikely we will go anywhere special).

@Corduroy: We definitely don't have any plans. But I enjoy spending at least some of my vacation time just being home alone. I was sort of figuring an extra week might be good because of 2020 - like if schools are closed again or things like that it would be helpful for me to be home

@gotkimchi: In a "normal" year I would. I'm not sure if I would for 2021. Have you considered what the uncertainty of the pandemic would do to your vacation plans?

We must take all vacation each year it’s use it or lose it. I’ve finally earned a 4th week based on years employed so I get 4 weeks and 10 personal days. If I buy a week it would be a 5th week. If I need to stay home for sick kids or things like that I would use one of my personal days. Our weeks of vacation are pre planned and it’s a whole week sun-sat

If you leave your job they say you need to pay back vacation if you’ve used more then you’ve earned like if you have 4 weeks vacation and take all 4 in the first 6mo you would owe them 2 weeks pay I guess? But in my experience they don’t enforce that and I’m not planning on leaving and I try to space my weeks pretty evenly in the year

My husband gets 3 weeks vacation and it’s not like we really have anything planned. This is just the first year they’re offering it so I’m not sure what to do!

What's company policy if you leave the company? Is it paid out or forfeited?

Do you exhaust all your vacation earned each year? Do you have capacity to take an extra week?

Depends on how much vacation time you have and need. When my husband changed jobs, he only got 3 weeks and the holiday schedule was set up differently (old job had xmas to new years off, new job only had xmas and new years day off) and 3 weeks wasn't enough for what we typically use, so he bought a week at 100%. Buying at 70% would have been awesome!

Depends on how much your partner gets, and if you have to use vacation if your kids are sick. Right now I get a week more than my husband plus I have family leave I can use if the kids are sick, so an extra week wouldn’t really be worth it. At my husband’s previous job he has a week more than me so then I might have gone for it.

Totally would because my family and in-laws are both far away so going to visit every year eats up most if not all vacation time (think 12-hr plane ride for my folks).
Last time I switched jobs, my biggest demand while negotiating was an extra week of vacation over what their standard was...

Would you buy an extra week of vacation if it’s offered to you?

It’s charged at 70% so we pay 70% of 1 weeks pay to have a week extra of vacation. What do you guys think?
