@boiledpnut: That is a really good point about the nitrate levels in the fresh vs. the commercial purees! I was using some purees as a base for my combos just to save on the work load but this is a good unintended benefit :)
I will have to check out the site you listed, I'm always up for inspiration.

I also like weelicious for food inspiration, too. She has a ton of really fun puree combinations.

@SCG00387: I didn't let her try it because prior to the peas she had apples that were kinds of gritty/grainy and she did not like it (plus, they were kind of tart too!), so i figure she wasn't quite ready for the texture yet but i will definitely try again!

@LINDSEYKAYE: ooh spices! you have such a fun menu lined up! i JUST started combining fruits/veggies. i'm a novice in the kitchen so i'm going slow. lol.

@OLIVIAOBLIVIA: can't wait to try yogurt! i haven't tried the chunkier peas yet but i plan to put that back in our rotation.

@BOILEDPNUT: thanks for the suggestions!

I've made peas, green beans, squash, pears, apples, peaches, plums, bananas, avocado, and chicken. We buy Gerber carrot puree and peas/carrots/spinach puree bc of the high nitrates in the fresh produce (carrots, spinach, turnips, and beets). No berries here until a year bc of the allergy risk. Wholesomebabyfood.com is an excellent site for recipes and info!

@Mrs. Chen: Yep - when I say rice or oatmeal I meant the cereal version. But now at 8.5 months and after introducing chunkier purees I think she may be ready to enjoy soft cooked brown rice and regular oatmeal.
And I forgot to mention that we also introduced yogurt not too long ago and after someone mentioning it on here (maybe you @regberadaisy but not in this thread?) but she tried hummus last weekend and that was a big hit too!

Next on my list to prepare for her are zucchini/summer squash, homemade green beans, tofu, and soft lentils. I am also starting to introduce some spices so I will try to make the lentils with a very little bit of curry as she loves the apples/bananas with cinnamon in them.

She will eat apples, bananas, green beans, blueberries, and peaches/necterines, but she has to be encouraged.

She won't eat peas.

@Mrs. Chen: I guess I don't get why you wouldn't let her try it?? Why make more work for yourself! I'd think chunkier purees would be easier to make, and then easier to transition to finger foods. Something else my LO loves is plain yogurt blended with spinach & blueberries :)

@beehive: yes, i added water but it still came out pretty chunky. maybe it's my blender? i ended up giving her store bought sweet peas and she gobbled that up!

@rattles: no, i don't have an immersion blender. i have the brezza baby food maker. i like it for it's convenience! steams and blends all in one...i'm a slacker in the kitchen. ooh mangos...gotta add that to her menu.

Hummus! How can I forget about hummus? She will eat anything slathered in hummus.

It's always good to offer some chunkier / fork mashed puree to introduce LO to different textures. I know a couple of older babies who don't cope well with lumpier food because they got too used to the really smooth stuff.

Do you have an immersion blender? Like @scg00387, I've given her fairly textured purées from the beginning, but I've had good luck at getting things (even peas) as smooth as I'd like with that.

@Mrs. Chen: I think we did yogurt around 7 months or so, though I know people have done it earlier. I also don't like the taste of yogurt at all, but J loves it! For the green beans (and peas), did you try adding a little water to it when you blend it? Maybe that would help you get a smoother consistency.

@travelgirl1: @beehive: thanks! at what age did you introduce yogurt? i'm not a fan of yogurt but sounds yummy with some fresh fruit!

@scg00387: no, i didn't even let her try it. i tried a few spoonfuls and it just tasted so lumpy! i used the brezza baby food maker and tried blending the heck out of it but still couldn't get it smooth. i used frozen peas if that makes a difference? hmm maybe i should try it again and give it to her to try. i have a bag of frozen greenbeans too but i haven't tried it making it yet because i'm afraid it will be the same texture as the peas!

J loves purees! We make them too. We have done:
Carrots
Parsnips
Green beans (for these, I blended them in the baby food maker and went over them again with an immersion blender to get them smooth enough)
Zucchini and summer squash (LO loves zucchini)
Sweet potato, butternut squash
Peas (these were a little chunkier, so I made them and introduced them around 7 months - we freeze batches of all the purees)

And lots of fruit purees too: strawberry, papaya, pineapple, mango, apple and pear of course. Once J started having yogurt (plain yogurt), we would mix a fruit puree in for his breakfast.

For tart things, don't assume your LO won't like them - I can't stand the taste of plain yogurt on its own, but J loves it! He always makes a face with the first bite, but then opens his mouth for more.

@lindseykaye: those are some fun combos! when you say rice do you mean rice cereal? or regular rice? i gotta try some of those combos!

@Mrs. Chen: I actually buy pouches of string beans b/c I figured they'd be hard to make on my own due to the stringiness. I've made peaches and she seemed to think they were a bit tart but when I've gotten them in a pouch, I tasted them and they were sweeter! Sometimes I'll mix with another fruit to make the homemade ones a bit sweeter.

Apple, blueberry, mama milk and oatmeal.
Sweet potato, apple, pinch of cinnamon.
Purée chicken, green beans and rice.
Peas, carrots, rice.
I tried making peas but I couldn't get it to a smooth consistency (too gritty) so I tossed it out. Need some ideas on what to make next! What does your LO love to eat? Any particular combos? I think I'm gonna do sweet potato and apples tonight!
