@delight: Yeah, LO is 4.5 months old. He has great head control and can roll both ways so I'm not too worried. I've been reading a few books that between 4 & 6 months is the best time to introduce. To begin with he'll just have it at feed times and to fall asleep (which I'm usually watching him on the monitor) and then I'll take it away until I'm 100% sure he can move it about on his own. He also has a breathing monitor attached to him for all naps so we'd know straight away if his breathing slowed down too much, but I doubt it would come to that! I'm made my own for him and it's just from light towel material - a totally breathable fabric :-)

@Mrs squirreld: @Cherrybee: DS has a dreamlite...has had it for a few years and it's always been great for bedtime. He even has already bought (well, I bought it...he just had the idea and picked it out) one for LO, because he wants the baby to have something to help him sleep at night, too.

@Cherrybee: haha I resurrected this thread because of a comment I saw from @Mrs squirreld: earlier this morning about introducing a lovey! I was starting to think that it was about time to actually let LO have hers in the crib.

@.twist.: aren't they so so cute? I have a list going for first birthday presents and just added those Loveys. I think they'd be nice to keep at daycare for nap time. Plus I have a million other A&A things, what's one more?

@Mrs squirreld: like I said, I looked up this thread because you mentioned earlier this morning about introducing a lovey. I think your LO is just a bit younger than mine (6m). Do you have any worries about a lovey in the crib? I get super paranoid easily when it comes to her and sleeping. I'm trying not to check on her overnight and during naps so I almost feel if I let her have it, I'll be checking on her more. Although I guess the A&A ones are completely breathable. What kind of lovey do you have?

@delight: No, but I really need to get on it! I want to get the A&A but I have gift cards to BRU so I want to get one there, and every time I'm there I'm rushed and can't find it in the aisles or anyone to help me. We've completely given up on the pacifier now (she started rejecting them, though still takes the bottle just fine) and now her thumb is her go to. Ah well. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it [thumb weaning].

I picked up this for her yesterday. Not sure how it will go, but it's hella cute :)

@Mrs squirreld: It's the Tomy Starlight Dreamshow, or something. It plays awful plinky plonky lullabies and projects this dreadful garish pattern on the ceiling but she watches it and falls asleep before it turns itself off every time.

It's so strange to see old threads I commented on.... three months ago seems like forever!

So, by way of an update, my MIL crocheted a lovey for DD, using baby safe cotton thread. It has an animal head and a blankie bit. When i put her down to sleep, DD grabs my hand and rubs it so I cover my hand in her lovey, let her feel my hand through the fabric then gradually remove my hand. She doesn't snuggle with it (at 6 months) but she throws it about the cot for a bit, waves it around and then eventually falls asleep. The best night time sleep aid we bought though was the projector - she loves staring at the colours on the ceiling!

@StrawberryBee: hey did you end up introducing a lovey?

We have the A&A ones and so far I just give to LO when she's nursing before sleep. She loves to rub it on her face and it keeps her from grabbing my nose or sticking her fingers in my mouth :) I've been nervous about it going in the crib but I guess I shouldn't be now what she's almost 6m.

@lawbee11: I saw those A&A animal head loveys at the store for the first time this week! Super cute! We just have the original ones but might have to get her one of these too :)

We wanted DS to have a lovey for self soothing purposes but he never wanted one as an infant. He was about 18 months when he finally became interested in a teddy bear and an AA lovey. They were reassuring, familiar security items for him that we used for sleeping, travel and new places like daycare. He's almost three and still sleeps with them. When he first started daycare at age 2, they let him bring the bear and I think it was very helpful for the transition. The nice thing is that he has never been super addicted to them. We don't have bring them with us everywhere and he doesn't ever freak out if they aren't there. At this point, I have no intention of taking them away since I don't see them as problematic at all. I will let him decide when he is done with them.

We just started giving it to R when we put her in the crib. She has an A&A security blanket like @photojane: posted. She also has this one. Some nights she sleeps with one or both, and then other nights she ends up on the other side of the crib. The blankies look sad all by themselves. But I think she is starting to become more attached.

My daughter never really attached to any of her lovies, and we bought a few anticipating she would. She is a binkie girl, but we keep it to the crib now that she's older and she gives us no issues when we tell her to put her binkie in the crib. At night, she likes to hold onto one or two more so we have a handful scattered in her crib. haha! She has a couple of blankets in there too and does rub her face on them some as she is getting ready to go down.

We use the A&A security blankets too. In fact, we have 8 of them, just in case. :) We only let him have it in the crib and it's helped him sleep at daycare and if we stay somewhere else for the night. Every time I put him to bed, I lay him down and place his lovely on his chest. He always grabs it and rolls over. In the middle of the night if he wakes, he searches for it and then cuddles up and back to sleep he goes!

I really want to limit it to only have when he's sleeping and wanted one that can be washed regularly. My niece carries her around all the time and it gets dirty and constantly left places. And of course, she freaks out.

@lawbee11: @photojane: @grizz: @kodybear: @Freckles: I was thinking of A+A when I started this thread, but I didn't know that they made (I'll call them stuffed head) loveys, or that they were available at Target. Excellent!! I was also thinking that we'd need to have at least two that look the same and can be rotated, so that they get equal amounts of wear and can be washed. DH has a pet allergy and wouldn't be able to touch it if it got 'contaminated'. I foresee a lot of washed blankets in our future :P.

My boss's son had a stuffed animal lovey and they only had one of them, so it got to the point that it could no longer be salvaged and she had a heck of a time trying to find a similar one (and then, explaining to her son why it looked so 'new'!).

@shellio: thank you for sharing your experience as an anesthesiologist. It's sweet to think of kids (young and old) being able to have a piece of something familiar and comforting with them in a scary situation.

We offered it at 4.5 months to help with her sleep. Sometimes when she is really upset i will offer it to her and it will provide her with some comfort. She does not use it at daycare (they don't allow it) and she hasn't had problems with naps without it. She is now 18.5 months.

I also recommend buying 2+ of the same lovey! @grizz: It was the worst when she was younger because she was napping so often and there was not enough time to wash it. It was sooo gross when i finally bought another one and washed the original one.

@Cherrybee: i would put it in the crib with her for naps and night time. in the beginning i would also let her play with it around the house and have it near her when i fed her. it took a couple weeks for her to get it tho.

i have the a&a security blankets too! i love how small and soft they are and we have a bunch just in case something happens to one.

@Cherrybee: I introduced it at times when he was sleepy and content, like eating. After doing that once or twice, I put it in bed with him. He rolls over to sleep on his belly, so he clutches his lovey under one arm and rubs it across his cheek. Its from Angel Dear.
Tip - buy a 2 pack or a 3 pack! I'm currently faced with the dilemma of the crusty lovey, and he takes a nap every 2 hours...I can't take it to wash it!

My DS likes his stuffed animals for sleeping but it is more to play with and cuddle, he doesn't seem to need to take them everywhere or anything. (22 mos old) We like having the familiar things with us when we travel.

As a side note, I'm an anesthesiologist and lots of kids bring their loveys with them into the OR when having surgery, even up to teenagers. It is so cute sometimes to see the big kids with these ratty blankets, stuffed animals, cloth diapers (I've seen it all). Some of them look/smell like they haven't been washed (ever) which is gross but if it soothes them, it is a good thing.

@StrawberryBee: we use the A&A security blankets from Target. They come in a 2 pack and they are super soft. I like them because they're really small and I have zero SIDS worries!
