I pushed for about 30 mins. I was lying down for it. The OB had to hustle to get there from his rooms in time to catch the baby!

I pushed a total of 3 times, I looked at the clock when they told me I was ready (11:43am) and said let's try to get this wrapped up by noon, I was more than ready to meet her! LO made her appearance at 11:57am.

I am so jealous, although I don't know if I qualify for this poll since I ended up with a c-section since my daighter's head was crocked and her body was sideways. But, I pushed for 3.5 hours before we made the decision for a c-section. Then I laid in bed screaming my head off and pushing on my own for an hour while we waited for the anethesologist to get to the hospital since my epi how worn off and I obviously couldn't go to the OR without it.

Two pushes is all it took for me so maybe 5 minutes or so? I didn't labor down per se but I allowed my body to start the pushing rather than doing it when told. I remember telling the nurse something about my body pushing even though I wasn't doing it.

I think pushing time also depends on what positions you push in. Because the people I know who pushe in squatting or kneeling position pushed for a shorter time than those who pushed with their legs raised up

Wow, I had 5 hours of pushing, but I took lots of breaks and only did it when I felt the urge. I have no idea why it took that long! I was fully dilated and used no meds.

@cyndistar3: I've read a few different birthing stories of natural mommas that took the bearing down approach. They all said that the feeling of their contractions changed & it was like they could feel their tummys actually pushing baby down even though they weren't pushing (one momma was actually waiting for her midwife to get there which is why she didn't push)

Not an easy task, but it seems to be very effective on not pushing as long AND preventing tearing since the body has time to prepare. =)

We waited a while past 10cm too, after that I pushed for 2 hours and 20 minutes- I really have no sense of time from that at all. I just remember starting at 7:30, the doc was hoping to have him out at 9:30 (gave me a goal), and he popped out at 9:50.

It was funny because with the epidural I was completely happy and chatty in between contractions until that last 20 minutes when things were getting close and I was very tired and just wanted him out.

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh okay, I won't be having an epidural but I think I will talk to my midwife about it more, it seems like a good idea. And thanks for the link that is interesting!

It really helps to have an epidural to do it, otherwise you might be too uncomfortable... But many docs have you push as soon as you are complete. Instead we waited another hour or so, allowing the tissue to stretch and prepare itself before starting to push as well as putting the baby deep into position.

This is the article that alerted me to the technique and positions:

@Mrs. Jacks: If you don't mind sharing, how exactly did you go about doing that? Like what position did you use? I tried pushing in so many different positions last time but the only way I could be comfortable was on my back, which I believe was because I was overly tired.

Statistically pushing for 2 hours is an average for a first time Mom. I have seen first time Moms get a baby out in as little as 12 minutes recently though.

When I first started pushing, I asked my nurse how long it would take. She said that for the first pregnancy 2 hours is average, but she thought I would push for one because the baby was already so low. And I did push for exactly an hour. Second pregnancies are usually shorter though.

At my last appointment one of the midwives told me that I pushed for an hour with my first child. I have no idea if that is good or bad and I didn't think to ask her about it. How long did all of you push for? Do you feel like you did a good job?
