plastic mixing bowls and any safe object (often granola bars still in wrappers!) that can be placed in and out have been a big hit around here.

um, L loves playing with tea boxes. Take the tea packets out, put them back in...repeat...

but he also got a fisher price shape sorter that has the shapes on the side but a big open hole on the top. he really likes that.

We have a great FREE item that LO loves... Save your milk caps, cut a slit for them in the top of a plastic container with a lid and he can put them in and out! LO is obsessed.

I used a shoe box, I cut holes of different sizes in it, and my son loved to put in all kinds of things, like play food, blocks, balls, etc.

I just got a basket. We store her toys in it, and when we are playing I will do something like put all her rattles in the basket, or put her stacking cups in the basket. I've been meaning to get some wooden shapes/blocks to do this with too. I try to avoid toys that will only be played with for a short period of time. The basket works great! Sometimes while i"m cooking I just give her a big plastic bowl and a couple toys. Fun times!

D just got this set for Chrismtas and he loves it. http://www.amazon.com/Kidoozie-G02082-Nest-Stack-Bucket/dp/B000CBSNBU Right now he just mostly throws the shapes into whatever bucket he feels like and shakes the bucket till they all bounce out...rinse....repeat. But this morning he was actually nesting the buckets. And he likes to *carefully* knock over the tower if I stack the buckets. And eventually he'll be able to use the shape-sorter. And we especially like it cuz the biggest bucket houses everything and has a handle, so we can bring it to the beach as a sand pail!

We have one like this: http://www.amazon.com/Plan-Toy-Shape-Sort-Out/dp/B00000ITIV/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1388427578&sr=8-3&keywords=wooden+shape+sorter

Right now, he just plays with the pieces and puts them in the box (not through the shape holes in the lid). But when he's old enough to be able to do that, we already have the toy! I like to buy toys that can serve multiple developmental purposes; more bang for my buck.

F loves "putting things in other things", too! I made a toy with old gift-box containers (small, decorative ones that you could get at the dollar store) & cotton Pom pom balls. I cut a hole in the lid and taped the edges, then put the cotton balls inside. He can dump them out & I help him put on the lid - then he pushes the balls through the holes. You could probably use washed food containers, like sour cream tubs.

ETA: F is just past a year & I haven't gotten him any traditional sorting block toys because I think he'd get frustrated if he couldn't make them fit (that's why he doesn't like puzzles yet).

LO is really into taking things in and out of containers. Any good toy recommendations? I feel like sorting toys are always on lists of recommended developmental toys. But he is only a year. I do don't think he'll get putting the zebra in the zebra shaped hole.
