Have you tried white noise?

I think getting them to fall asleep on their own is a process that will take time if you don't want to do CIO, so patience is a must. Around 10 weeks we started putting her down drowsy but would pick her up and rock to sleep when she cried. Gradually it got easier. At 9 months now I nurse/rock her for a few minutes and now most of the time she will lay quietly for up to 30 mins on her crib before falling asleep.

@Apples4Teacher: It's actually worst for naps! DH takes care of bedtime, and often says its easy.

@Grace: Thanks for sharing, this method is definitely worth a try :)

@catomd00: If I put him down without rocking, he starts kicking (waking himself up more), then eventually starts crying. I tried it for a nap today and it didn't end well. Maybe I should let him cry 3 minutes like Sandy suggests...

@Seattlemom: It's actually not bedtime that's the problem, naptime is worse. I loosely follow the 90min awake cycle too, but if I see him getting sleepy earlier I start trying ASAP. I feed him every 3 hours (or less), and always try to put him down for a nap 15mins or so after feeding.

@Mrs.Someone: I agree with @Apples4Teacher suggestion of tring to put LO to sleep a little earlier. He may be over tired by that point and getting all worked up. We followed the 90min awake cycle. So once LO had been awake 75 mins of so I'd start trying to get him to sleep. Even if he didn't "look" tired it usually worked!

What happens if you just put her down without rocking? There's a lot in between CIO and rocking to sleep. We rock until drowsy (or now that she's older until she flips out an gets mad) and lay her down. Sometimes she falls right asleep, other times she rolls around and playa with her lovey and wubbanub for up to 30 mins before falling asleep. Sometimes she cries. Of she cries we pick her up until she stops, then lay her down again and repeat until she goes to sleep. Just like adults sometimes take longer/shorter to fall asleep some nights, so do babies.

Sandy's method worked best for me. LO actually cried less when I put her in her crib than when I was rocking /bouncing. I think I had been too stimulating and all she wanted was to be left alone to fall asleep. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/what-to-do-before-sleep-training

@Mrs.Someone: we did do CIO at that age. Nursing to sleep stopped working and we would be spending an hour some nights rocking and bouncing her to sleep. We were all going insane. I tried other methods but just didn't have the patience- since I hadn't slept in three months!

Maybe try an earlier bedtime? Maybe just moving it back in 15 minute increments or something?

FWIW, I rock LO to sleep for naps and it only goes well if I catch him during his "sleepy window". I have no idea how daycare does it!

We deal with the same. I think it's just the age that they fight sleep and wake easily when you try to lay him down.

I'm sure this topic has been discussed to death around here...

What are some gentle methods for getting an infant to sleep/nap quicker?

DS is 3.5mo and sleeps well at night (lately 10pm-7am, feeding, then back to bed). But it usually takes too long to get him down, especially for naps. He will not nurse to sleep. We swaddle him, then rock, shush, whatever (while he's screaming usually), until he calms down and falls asleep (or mostly asleep). I'd love to be able to swaddle and put him down. But I think he is too young for CIO, and I'm not sure I'm OK with it anyway.
