I just put my beautiful corgi down on Sunday. My husband and I got her 13 years old so my children have never known a life without her. It has been very difficult and I am so sorry you are going through it as well. </p> <p>For talking to your daughter I am usually simple and honest. "winger had an illness that couldn't be fixed by the vet and she died this morning" Then let them lead the conversation. Answer succinctly and honestly. Cry with them and show them that grief is OK. I saw you mentioned the rainbow bridge so I am assuming you have a religious background. I would highly recommend the book Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. It is a wonderful and positive book that my kids have read a ton. Our beagle died three years ago and again we are using it now they love it and are comforted by it.</p> <p>Again I am so sorry for your loss. Pets truly are part of the family. </p> <p>In regards to how to explain to LO ... I resort to it being a learning lesson. She loves the dog, and knows you love the dog - why not use it as a time to teach her what death is. If you have beliefs in an afterlife, it would apply here too.
