Very good that she wasn't planning on bringing the dog! I would take it a step further than that, even - I don't think it's okay to even ask to bring your dog to someone else's house. I think it's on the host to explicitly offer that it's okay to bring the dog. If I don't get that offer from the host, I assume it would be rude of me to even ask to bring my dog. I definitely would never be offended by someone asking me to leave my dogs at home.

I always get pre-approval and we really only bring him with us on overnight stays. I also agree that it is gross to let your dog pee on pads just cause it can contain their output.

Not a pet owner, but DH and I are allergic to pets. And the smaller the dog/shorter the fur, the worse the reaction for me.

So if you ARE a pet owner and think your little dog should be welcome anywhere because it's portable, and fits in your purse, think again.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: you should definitely talk to her about it ASAP. If you're not comfortable with having the dog, you need to make sure she knows and can arrange for care. It's not so easy to find a dog-sitter/kennel, especially on short notice. I think it'd be terribly rude to "turn the dog away at the door". Sure, maybe she *should* ask first, but if you know she likes to travel with her dog you can prevent hurt feelings/trouble by just checking in.

Even though I know it's ok to bring our 80lb dog to my parents' house I still always ask prior that we can bring him. After all, it's their house. Also, that a dog is not house trained would be a no-no for me unless there was a good reason (puppy, new rescue, etc). This coming from someone who absolutely loves dogs.

I have a 20# dog and I bring her pretty much everywhere if it's an overnight visit. She is potty trained though, I couldn't get her to go on a puppy pad if I tried (and I did, during a hurricane).

My dog is part of my family. I would never bring her uninvited if there were cats or small children in the household. But I was super offended one year when my ILs told me I couldn't bring her to Christmas and almost didn't go. It made me so sad to think of not being with her on Christmas and her sitting all alone for no good reason.

We have 2 small dogs (18 lbs and 24 lbs) and never, ever, ever bring them anywhere without explicitly asking. we also never use wee-wee pads except when the younger one was a puppy before the vet cleared her to go out on the nyc streets--that's gross, take your dog outside, lol! ANd we're in an apt too, so it's not like we have a yard either, our dogs are just trained to hold their business

My husband has a friend who loves to travel with her dog. I made him tell her she needs to kennel the dog when she visits us. We live in a 2bd 2ba apartment with a toddler and two cats. We barely have room for a human houseguest. It would probably freak out our cats to invite a dog over.

When I suggested we put it in the garage if she brings it he threw a hissy fit because of all his gym equipment in there.

I'll woman up in a bit and just ask. She's coming in two days, I'd imagine by now she would have asked us if it's okay to bring the dog.

Since she is traveling and staying overnight, can you have your husband ask if she is boarding the dog or hiring a sitter? It sounds like maybe she thinks the dog is family and welcome at family celebrations. Like my family wouldn't have to expressly invite my son to holiday gatherings, they know he's coming and I know he's going with us.

My aunt invited her sweet but wacky friend to Thanksgiving one year and the friend brought her dog, pretty sure she cleared that with my aunt. However, the dog ate dinner with us at the table and I don't think anyone expected that. I was terribly allergic to the dog and couldn't wait to get out of there. My family loves dogs and they are part of the family in a sense, but we don't bring them to social gatherings.

We have a medium-sized dog (who is outdoor trained) that we like to haul around with us, but we don't take her to people's homes without prior permission. My aunt hosts a lot of family functions and it's clear that when our dogs play together it stresses her out, so we stopped bringing our dog there. I think her reaction is weird (her dog is twice the size of mine and they have fun playing!) but it's her house, so whatevs.

@mediagirl: yep, the dog even had an accident in the house not on the wee wee pad during Thanksgiving. The dog knocked over his food bowl and that clean up was not all the clean IMO. I think SIL is oblivious to how much her bro and zip don't like the dog. I'd hate to have turn the dog away at my front door.

The dog poops and pees in the house? No. No way. That would not be happening.

We visit my parents quite often and always tell them that we are bringing our dog, just as a reminder.

I ALWAYS ask friends or other family if we can bring our dog with us. And only ask them if I know they are pet-friendly people.

We have a small-ish dog (18 lbs) and we don't always bring him with us when we go to family functions. I prefer to bring him if it's going to be a bigger gathering, because otherwise we have to leave early to feed him (in our case, family get togethers are an hour away).
When we first got him, we would ask one certain SIL because she was not very comfortable with dogs, but now we don't generally check first.

If you own a small dog, one that can fit in a little carrier and goes on wee wee pads, do you travel with said pet? Would you clear the dog's presence with the host?

SIL brought her dog to her mom's house on Thanksgiving. I don't want to open a can of worms by flat out telling her she can't bring the dog to my house if perhaps she most likely wouldn't anyway.
