She's such a good producer so I thought we were ok. But turns out baby girl has a terrible latch and is incredibly slow at nursing. Mom just doesn't stand still long enough foroom her to get much. Plus I think she aspirated (maybe because of her crappy nursing abilities) so she's fighting a respiratory infection. One of the things I miss most from my childhood are baby goats! I grew up on a Nubian and La Mancha farm, so we always had babies. I hated goats milk though, much to the sadness of my parents who had a long drive into town regularly for cows milk :P </p> <p>Glad the little girl is doing better, that was my first thought at reading quads, sometimes the littlest needs some supplementing. To me they are the perfect small farm animal. They are less smelly than chickens and more gentle than dogs. And cheaper than horses. They basically want to spend time with us as much as our dogs (but aren't as needy). They are 100% trustworthy around kids. </p> <p>As far as care goes they're not really any more trouble than chickens. You do need decent fencing. They will jump. Our does have never really challenged our fencing but our buck jumps. We have a mix of 4' and 3'. The 3' probably isn't sufficient, we just have good girls. We have dwarf goats, so full sized would need much taller fencing. We live in an area with coyotes and possible mountain lions and even wolves, so we lock our goats in a small barn at night. Actually our buck gets locked in a 10 x 10 chain link dog kennel with two dog houses for shelter. But he's naughty. </p> <p>We give them grass hay and alfalfa when they're pregnant or nursing and a little grain. They are pretty cheap to feed. </p> <p>Anyway, happy to answer any other questions directly if you want. But I absolutely love having goats. We ate bottle feeding and she's sleeping in the house at night to stay warm.
