I'm glad you got your answer, I was going to add that we have BCBS as well and when I was pregnant in 2011 every single visit was 100% covered. Not so this time, we have a $1200 ded. and until we reach that we have to pay 5%. Ours may be a little different though, it's through Highmark BCBS. Bunch of BS!

yeah I have BCBS too and they wanted me to pay. I argued with them til I was blue in the face and they covered it - BUT, only because I called when I got a positive pregnancy test to learn my coverage. I asked about the NT scan, because I would opt out of that if I had to pay and save my one "covered" scan for my anatomy scan. The woman assured me several times that I got the NT scan and another second trimester screen.

Turns out she was referring to the same one but didn't make that clear - so they reviewed the tapes of our conversation and ended up covering it!

I got my answer, ladies! thanks to all who responded. It was a combination of both.

During my first pregnancy 2 years ago, my 20 week fetal assessment was conducted at my dr's office. They had an ultrasound tech on staff that came in a few days a week. In that case, the insurance company billed it as a regular ultrasound from the dr's office.

This time around, my dr. told me to go to the hospital. She gave me the impression in previous visits that their ultrasound equipment was better so I didn't think twice about going there this time...but those charges are billed through the actual hospital so they get applied toward the deductible and out of pocket expense. (I had not met the deductible or OOP yet)

I called BCBS twice and each lady gave me the same answer....so even though the actual service was the same, I am paying about $240 more this time around.

go figure insurance companies.... *insert frustrated face here*

I have mine scheduled for next week and it will be a separate charge than my regular ob visits. My regular ob is sending me to a perinatologist who did my genetic testing.

ETA: I haven't met my deductible yet so I am expecting to pay out of pocket but hopefully after these charges I will be maxed out.

I think mine was covered but I'm always getting weird little charges. I would call and check. It could be something like paying your deductible first. Like @Goldilocks1107: I know I will hit my max oop so I don't care that much about the little charges right now.

Was it the normal 20 week anatomy scan or was it an actual Fetal Assessment? I had a Fetal Assessment today which was in a special unit of the hospital with more sensitive ultrasound machines and with nurses and doctors and a genetic counsellor coming to talk to me. I could imagine that would be more expensive than the regular one.

No, that one was covered. Actually most of my ultrasounds were covered, and I had a lot. I did owe a little for the nt scan, though. Sorry about your bill, I'd definitely call! Maybe it was the way your dr coded it?

I had to pay - I think my insurance covered a percentage of the ultrasound and I had to pay the rest out of pocket (around $250). But I also had a max annual OOP of $1000 for the year, so it didn't really matter because it was included in the $1000 max, meaning I had to pay less OOP for the actual birth.

All of my ultrasounds have been covered by insurance. Anything with a medical purpose is covered for me.

Do you have a deductible? My insurance just changed and now I owe $250 a year, which they sent as a bill after a hospital visit or ultrasound.

Hi everyone,
Just had a question I'm hoping you ladies can help me with. I had my 20 week assessment where they measure the amount of amniotic fluid, that the baby has the right bones in the right places, gender!, etc etc. I was under the impression this was a regular part of my (and everyone's) prenatal care and would be covered by insurance like all my other prenatal appts are (with a $20 copay).

However, I just received a statement from my insurance company saying that I may owe $260 for the ultrasound. (My insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield and has usually given me some great coverage overall).

Did you ladies have to pay "extra" for the 20 week ultrasound? I don't remember this happening with my first pregnancy - every time they sent me to the hospital for a special ultrasound, I only had to pay a $20 copay. I guess I'll have to dig into my prenantal file folders to jog my memory but wanted to know what your experience was.
