I agree with PPs. Close friends I would spend around $50, not as close about $30.

Family gets $50+. Someone that I'm/DH is close to gets $30-40. Just a friend gets around $20 (I usually just contribute to the group gift.)

i think it also depends on how close you are. for example, someone i'm not close to is probably getting a 20.00 gift. one of my best friends had two showers and I went to both. I spent about 30 on each gift for that - so 60.00 total on baby gifts for her. if she would have just had one, i would have gotten her one gift around 50-60.00

I always go for homemade gifts. I made a diaper cake, quilt and baby leg cupcakes for my sister this weekend. The baby leg cupcakes are my go to present.

I have a few showers to attend coming up and I'm spending $30-$40.

I've only been to showers for people that I'm really close to, so my normal gift is around $50, but I go up for people that I'm very closest to. For someone that DH was really close to, I'd stick with a similar price point. For someone I'm not that close to, I'd be more inclined to do something small, including something from TJ Maxx. I just make sure to buy something that is seasonless so it doesn't matter when they fit into it, like onesies, pajamas.

I like putting together gift baskets or diaper cakes! Now that I've experienced the newborn stage, I really like packing in things that I considered to be essentials. I think $20-30 is fine, especially if you aren't very close with the person, but I usually end up spending more since it is so fun to baby shop ;)

Like @looch said, I generally don't like when people buy things for the far future sizes because they never think about the fact it will be the middle of winter before my little girl can fit into that super cute little sun dress and super cute tank top and skirt set.

I have always spent around $50-$60 at any baby shower I attended, and closer to or around $100 on people I am close to. However, I just had my baby shower, and I realized I have been being too generous to many people such as my husband's friends wives in particular! It seems like most of them spent about $35-$50 on me. If I could do everyone again I'd spend more like $40 with the exception of those I'm close to.

maisymay: yes, buy for at least the 6 month size. the thing is though, that all clothing lines fit differently and you just don't know what size the kid is going to wear at what age and in what season. To give you an idea, my 10 month old DS wears size 18 months in Carters, 12-18 months in BabyGap and 12 months in Ralph Lauren.

I don't buy clothes as gifts. I give something along the lines of Sophie the Giraffe if I want to spend under $25. I've also given a Very Hungry Caterpillar board book and stuffed toy. I always include a gift receipt, so if I wouldn't want to let the recipient know the store or how much I paid, I pass on that gift.

IMHO - Just don't buy newborn/up to 3 months! Every mama I talk to says that she has so much for the first few months that Baby doesn't even get to wear it all. I try to make sure that whatever I buy is for at least 6 months or older. I don't go nutty and get 1 year+, but I try to find stuff for when the Baby is a little older so that the parents don't have to buy everything then.

I think discounters are fine if you are going to buy for yourself, but I don't like to go that route for gifts...especially for new parents. It's a pain when you get clothes that have no tags and they don't fit your kid. What do you do with them? It's not like I don't appreciate it, but if I can't use it and I can't return or exchange it, it's wasted money, YKWIM?

If you're tight on money (and who isn't these days), handmade items are the way to go. But if you're also short on time, I would definitely hit up stores like Ross & Marshalls like Bee suggested. They've got cute brand name outfits, blankets, toys. They don't need to know that you didn't pay full price :).

thanks for the responses - I think I am just going to spend $50 worth of stuff off her registry. I would just feel bad if she had spend $100 on my gift. I know I don't think like that but like I said I'm not too close with her but my husband is close with her husband.

i saw a cute idea to get those monthly stickers from etsy and buy onesies in size 0-12 months and already put them on.

@Mrs. Bee, great tips! If I have enough prep time, I like doing handmade gifts too. My go-to if I have time to make it is a simple quilt that costs me about $10 in materials and takes a couple hours to complete, but everyone seems to love that its handmade!

i agree with adira. i think $20 for someone you're not close to (perhaps some baby clothes or toys), $50-100 for a close friend, i spent about $300 for my bro and SIL (but i would only do that for them).... also, what you could do is get a group of people to pool money to get a really nice present..

how about making a diaper cake? they're pretty inexpensive to do with a package of diapers, ribbon, and a topper like a stuffed animal!

i tend to spend a lot on gifts so i'm not a good person to ask. the general rule of how close you are to the couple still applies, but i definitely think you can spend under $50 and come up with a great gift.

I think honestly it depends on how close you are to the person. I usually spend in the $25 range for coworkers (lately a TON of my husband's coworkers have been having babies) and around the $40-$50 range for friends/family.

I think it probably depends on your area - how much is normal. I live in the Northeast and I would probably spend $20 on someone I wasn't super close to (like my husband's friend's wife), but in the past I've spent around $50 on my close friends or family.

I always have a hard time figuring out how much money to spend on gifts. I had my baby shower before a lot of my friends and if I was more organized I would be able to tell you what everyone got me and so I would spend the same on them. Well, I only remember the really generous or original gifts (oops).

So my questions are: Do you spend the same amount as was spend on you? Is the etiquette similar to a wedding, where you are supposed to "cover" your plate? If it isn't too personal, can you tell me how much you spend on a husband's friend's wife?

Sorry if this is tacky or controversial, I am just stumped (also broke, did I mention I have a kid? )! :)
