I sort of followed rules. Started out w/ purees and gave the same food for a few days in a row. Once we started more BLW around 7 months, I basically ignored the rules. My son had a dairy intolerance so we avoided that altogether until recently.

@regberadaisy: oh, definitely not planning on doing any nuts any time soon! Although I always say I would know if LO had a peanut allergy because I eat a lot of peanut butter and I feel like I'm always breathing it in his face inadvertently!

@Cole: on that note... hilsy I just wanted to reiterate that most peds don't reco peanut/butter before a year. And some even say 2. And honey is a no no in ANY form until they're one.

@hilsy85: I just wanted to chime in on the allergy part of things, I still wouldn't change how you plan to proceed, but a fair number of allergies (peanuts and tree nuts come to mind) won't produce a reaction the first or even first few times they have it. I know a lot of people who have struggled to figure out what the allergen is because they rule out something their lo had safely had before. Odds of you needing to worry about it are slim but I thought I would throw it out there.

@sarac: ah ok, so it was the same day...that seems like it makes sense for food allergies, I wouldn't imagine there would be a delayed reaction. And yikes about the hazel nuts! I always think it's strange when adults develop allergies! I hope your DD doesn't have it. @mewtill: my LO also makes weird faces the first time I put anything in his mouth! I feel like the whole thing is just trial and error, and more trial :)

I should say that my husband has developed a worrying allergy to hazelnuts in recent years - full on scratchy, swelling throat reaction to increasingly small amounts. So I was very cautious when it came to hazelnut butter and such for my daughter - just a tiny taste the first several times, and increasing amounts after that. We'll likely always be careful with that.

@hilsy85: She had cherries that day, and it was probably the only new thing she'd had. Then when I changed her diaper, I noticed that she had full on raised hives where the poop had touched her skin. No more cherries, problem goes away. Then I gave her a tiny bit of cherry the next week, saw tiny raised welts in her skin after pooping, and felt pretty confirmed.

If she'd had other new things that day, I'd have just experimented with tiny bites like I did with the cherries. And this was the only issue like this, so I didn't feel like I needed to start being more careful. Some fruits, like peaches and oranges give her more diaper rash, so she eats smaller amounts of those until she's used to them. But that's not a huge deal.

But yeah, it was pretty clear what the issue was. It was easy to fix, and it didn't make me feel like I wanted to start being more careful. It wasn't a huge deal.

@hilsy85: he's 6 months. I'm thinking maybe he just doesn't know what to do with things in his mouth that aren't milk. we've done whole foods and also some purees (daycare will only be doing baby food) and he makes a weird face every time. He's only liked avocado and carrots so far (no to bananas, pears, sweet potato and apples). We're going to try broccoli this week & see.

@hellobeeboston: nope haven't tried them yet. I think it's a texture thing, which may also by why he didn't like squash. They're both kind of slimy in purée form, which I don't think he likes. He seems to like creamy purées like the avocado.

We didn't wait, but we didn't have any food allergies in our family (except FIL is allergic to a lot of nuts, but we are waiting on nuts and honey). We discovered a mild contact allergy to strawberries (he got a rash on his chest where the juice had been dripping) but that's been it so far.

I would wait at least one day maybe? I'm overly cautious though... I'm currently doing the 3 day thing now, but think we will probably cut that down to 1-2 days. I want 1 24hr window just to check & make sure he doesn't have a reaction of any kind. Also, no food allergies - but I have friends with no history of food allergy & their kids have them, so you never know.

@hilsy85: We did but I have a pretty decent history of allergies in both of our families.
Don't be afraid to reintroduce the same foods at a later date in different ways. ie I must've given M bananas 6-7 different times in different ways. She did not like it, just about the only thing she did not like! Then one day I gave it to her whole and she chomped a whole banana down! Now she loves it but only if I give it to her whole! hahah

I do every other day and don't introduce two new foods at once. So I did apples (new food) one day and then avocado (establish food) the next day and then the third day sweet potato (new food). If he'd never had broccoli or pears I wouldn't do both on the same day (also, that sounds like a super gross combo). I'm also only giving him one type of food at a time.

However, he doesn't seem to be enjoying any of the foods at the moment. I'm torn between keeping it going to "practice" (maybe he just doesn't know what to do with the food when it's in his mouth?) or giving up and trying again in a few weeks.

@Kemma: ok that's what I figured! I think I'm going to follow that aspect of BLW while we're still doing purees...we have no history of allergies and it seems a bit silly to have to give the same food for 3-4 days before moving on!
