You don't need to, but I think they get moister in the fridge...

If it makes you feel any better, I only make boxed cakes with canned icing and people always tell me I'm great at making cupcakes! I say thanks...I sure am good at mixing ingredients together. :) Some canned frostings make the cake soggy if you leave them room temperature, but I haven't figured out the secret for which ones do and which ones don't.

I only refrigerate it if it is a whipped cream or cream cheese frosting. Canned def doesn't require it.

Thanks ladies! Cake gets yucky and dry in the fridge so I didn't want to do that. I'm not used to making boxed cake with canned icing.... I'm already not excited about my cake as it is.... but I just don't have time with LO here attached to me every second!

As long as its pretty cool in your house! I think refrigeration might be necessary in the summer for an iced cake to prevent icing melting.

@mrstilly: Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear. The icing says to refrigerate after opening so I didn't know.

You can leave it out. I never refrigerate box cakes, nor does anyone I know.

I made a box cake for DH and already iced it. Do I have to refrigerate it or can I leave it out?
