I'm usually home, but I've also left it many times when I wasn't home and there wasn't a problem. I believe they were designed so they could safely be left alone?

I too worry about leaving my crock pot on all day while I'm at work except it's for a different reason, even though there's a timer and everything I worry that I'm gonna over cook the food!

I love my Crockpot but I, too, am too scared to leave it on when I'm not home. I know that's how it's meant to be used but I'm an anxious dork. I usually make my Crockpot meals over the weekend or I do it overnight. I prefer overnight because I'm home and I normally wake up in the middle of the night to pee so I check it.

@T-Mom: That stinks! We have such a basic one, I don't think it can backfire. It's literally just a dial that you have to manually turn from off to low, high or warm.

@sunshineandsushi: I do this too! But it backfired on me last time I tried it, because my "semi-smart" crockpot has to be programmed before it starts cooking, and I forgot that last time. I ended up with a crockpot full of uncooked food because the timer turned the outlet on at the set time, but no one was there to push the button and tell it how long to cook for, ugh!

Eta: to answer the original question I leave it on but also run dryer, dishwasher, whatever else can be done while I'm gone!

@pregnantbee: I use one of those Christmas tree light timers for my crockpot. I just set the timer for the period of time it should cook on low for. After that time ends, it turns off, but we time it to end right around the time we get home, then switch it to warm until we're ready to eat.

I always leave my crockpot on! I'm getting a smaller one for christmas too - we have a 5 qt, but a lot of time that's wasted space. I'd love a smaller one for sauces and things.

@JoJoGirl: I put the bags in bowls...I was thinking the same thing and was trying to improvise, so I used some smaller mixing bowls and tupperware. My husband came into the kitchen while all this was going on and was like "what the heck are you doing" but he wasn't complaining when i served up balsamic beef!

I love my crockpot! Thanks to the ladies here, I'm getting more into it and trying new things. One of my concerns is that many recipes say "low" for 6 hrs. I'm gone longer than that, so if I turn it on before I leave and then it stays on "warm" for several more hours, would that ruin my meals? Mine is a cuisinart with timed "off" to warm, but I don't think I can set it to turn on.

@JoJoGirl: I did a similar thing, I did the Green chile pork, the italian lemon chicken and balsamic beef, all courtesy of Mrs. Wagon.

I actually parceled out the spices first, put those in the bag with the liquids and chopped veggies (if there were any) and did the meat as the last step so I wouldn't have to wash up until the very end. I did an assembly line right on my kitchen table!

Yes!! All the time! And I was so inspired by these crockpot freezer meals I cooked for 90 mins yesterday and dinner is done for the week!! If these are any good I'm going to seriously start doing this every weekend.

On the menu:

Stuffed peppers from the six sisters freezer meal plan
Italian lemon chicken from I think mrs polish
Sausage and lentil stew also from mrs polish?

All paleo, nothing processed, and the peppers are cooking now while the other two are in the freezer. :)

We go this route because we're out of the house at 6:30 and not home until more than 10 hours later, so I put the food in frozen and turn it on high for 6 hours beginning at noon.

Definitely! I was so scared the time I did that with dry ribs, though. I feel okay if the crock pot is full of liquid but for some reason I thought that just putting my rubbed ribs in there would make the pot spontaneously combust. So, I thought leaving them in there, while we weren't home all day, was the best decision ever...

Yes, I leave it on all day for the 6 or 8 hour setting. I wouldn't use the 4 hour setting because it switches to a warming setting if no one turns it off and the food would continue to cook. I am not worried about the appliance being on all day.
