I was too much of a chicken to just jump right into BLW so we started with purees, then started introducing solids once I got more comfortable with him eating by himself. by 9/10 months old, he was rejecting all purees!

My LO was always a gagger so we did purees in the beginning and then did BLW as a compliment to that. He had purees for breakfast and lunch during the week. At dinner time a BLW snack and on the weekends I would offer larger bits.

We did puffs at about 7mo, Cheerios at 8mo and yogurt melts at about 9mo.

Around 8mo he started getting really interested in 'table food' and by 9 mo we had ditched all the purees.

Now at 11mo he does mostly BLW but a pouch here and there if I am lazy or we are out and about. In the last two weeks he has been way more interested in food. Before then it was kind of take it or leave it except for cheerios - those are like candy to him!

LO is only 5 months (3.5) adjusted, so we're not even close to offering real food/purees, but this is exactly what we're planning to do. Glad to see that you can switch off between the 2 and still be successful!

I had planned on BLW from the start, but DD just didn't have the motor skills to match her interest for food. She was 4 weeks early as well so we switched to purees and have been doing that since 6 months. Lately she hasn't been that into the purees so yesterday (she's almost 8 months) I gave her some big pieces of fruit from a fruit salad and she did great! I couldn't believe how well she could bring it to her mouth even though the pieces were quite slippery. I think we'll try to transition over to more BLW style now that I have seen her do well.

We did a mix and just recently have ditched the purées (at 9 months) because DS simply won't eat them anymore- he now prefers to pick up food from his tray. But up until that point, it just depended on the food- veggies/fruits were good as both purées and small soft pieces, but DS would NOT eat puréed meats, only small pieces.
I think it's fine to experiment and see what works out best for your baby :) It sounds like you're giving him plenty of practice with feeding himself, so feeding him a few purées to get him to try new flavors and textures won't hurt :).

We do a mix of purees/spoon feeding and finger foods. DD loved food but often got frustrated that she could't feed herself efficiently, so I tried offering her purees and she loved them. She still loved feeding herself, too, though, so I started offering her both at the same time. If I'm spoon feeding her I also offer finger foods on her tray so that she can feed herself. Usually for breakfast she gets yogurt mixed with fruit puree and fruit or sometimes yogurt drops or puffs on her tray. For lunch she gets just finger foods - veggies and some of what I'm having if she can. For dinner she gets a veggie puree and more veggie finger foods. Some days she wants nothing to do with the finger foods. Some days she only wants the finger foods. Either way, she's getting to experience food. :)

Me! My baby loved to eat, but she wasn't ready for real foods that early. So, we did chunky applesauce, yogurt with smashed fruit, cream of wheat with fruit. I never made anything thin or totally puréed. And we just kept offering her very tiny pieces of food, and gradually switched over from purées. By about 10 months she was totally on solids, although only really soft easy ones for a while after that.

Now she's a fantastic eater who never understands when other people don't want her eating off their plates. I feel like we did a great job.

Our son loved purees but by about 7 months he really wanted to feed himself; a habit of watching his big sister, I suppose. :) Except that he wasn't very efficient at it, and he'd cry while trying to feed himself because he was too hungry. So I would put some whole pieces of food on his tray while feeding him a puree made out of the same food (e.g. Steamed carrot slices on the tray with mashed carrot puree). Once he ate a good amount of puree (a few ounces), he could feed himself the rest of his meal BLW style. As he got older, I started giving him a fruit or veggie pouch first, so he could feed himself the puree and the rest of the meal, and we pretty much completely removed the purees and went strictly to BLW at 11 months.

We did a combo. It was based on how convenient it was for us that day. My LO never had a problem switching between the two, but chunkier purées did nothing to help that. In fact she would only eat smooth purées or feed herself chunks. She still doesn't really like chunkier purée-like foods.

ETA: We would often do purées for breakfast and lunch, a BLW snack, and a mix of purées and finger foods for dinner. No special reason, it was just easy for us.

All through my pregnancy, I had done a lot of research about BLW and was really excited to start it when DS turned 6 mo. I watched as my friend did this with her DD and was so excited that I returned all other baby spoons and other feeding supplies people gave me at my shower.

And, of course, my LO isn't into it at all. He will put everything into his mouth except a piece of food you put in front of him. We've tried having him suck on a slice of apple, a slice of avocado, steamed sweet potato sticks and a large piece of banana. When he does get it to his mouth, he gags something crazy and usually ends up throwing up. I figured, he's just not ready. And that's ok.

However, on a whim, I tried mashing up the sweet potato with some breast milk and some banana and he went nuts! He can eat about 4-5 oz at a sitting if we let him. I've tried now to make the purees a little chunkier than normal super smooth purees as I don't want him to get used to the thin texture.

Most days, we usually try to give him a piece of food to play with before we give him purees so that he continues to practice but he's not a fan.

Yes, I know that food before one is just for fun, all babies are different and all that. I was hoping that those of you out there who do a combo of purees and BLW can share what they do and how their LO's handle it. Thanks!
