@MommySLP: that makes sense! The stringing together is new. He has been saying "where go?" For a while but has only added a name to it a handful of times, and that is his only "phrase", but he is getting closer and it's improving. He definitely vocalizes when he wants something (he uses words, not grunts or single sounds) but it is almost always "this" except for the 10-15 words he uses all the time. I will keep emphasizing the right words and try not to worry! :) thanks!

@Mrs. Lion: this is pretty common and I would keep an eye on it but not worry at this point. If he's stringing multiple words together that's awesome and very age appropriate. I would only really be concerned if he begins decreasing his use of language/communication. If he wants something, I would withhold it until he uses some vocalization/word. You can also repeat the word in a "question" tone of voice. So if he wants a ball you can hold the ball & say "ball?" Require him to vocalize for it. If he just says "this" you can say "oh you want the ball. This is a ball." And then give it to him.

I think the fact that he is stringing together words is a great sign for his age. I would wait until his 2 year appointment and ask your pediatrician then if it's still an issue.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: Yes, he still knows what the words are...he just refuses to say them! Like we used to be able to ask "What does the cow say" and he would moo. Now he just says "this!" and points to it.

And he is definitely more conversational now. He answers OK or no when we ask questions, and he wants to talk to us all the time. He just wont name things anymore. It is very odd. :)

If his other language skills are making leaps, it could be his brain is just overloading. Once he 'masters' the new concepts, the words will probably come back.
Does he still remember the words he used to use? Like, if one was 'lion' and you ask him to point to the lion, can he do it?

If you're really concerned in another few months, I'd get an evaluation, but it sounds pretty typical.

I don't think it's a major concern. I would definitely say them for him, but give him some wait time before you supply the word. I'll often whisper the initial sound of the word to prompt LO to repeat. Using multi word phrases is a big deal! So that sounds like good progress.

My LO (25 months) goes through phases of "what's this"-ing where she wants me to name everything for her. I've found that if I ask her it back (aka: I don't know, what is this?) she will often times give me the answer back. Her language really took off over the last two months, though, and before that she really focused on listening. I'm kind of amazed at all the words she suddenly knows and the contexts in which she can identify them. My guess is your LO is similar and just taking it all in for now.

I'm not one to worry too much about language development, especially since I know as a SAHM I tend to interpret her easily and she has had less need to communicate effectively with me.

To be honest it sounds like he is just being lazy or not wanting to label BUT I still wouldn't hesitate to get a second opinion from EI only because regressions around this age can be concerning and you want to know before age three for the best outcome. I really don't think you have to worry though.

Lo's language has been on my radar as a possible problem since about 9 months. According to his developmental checklist from the pediatrician he is on the low end of normal, but he is further ahead in other areas and has always been the low end of normal, so that part doesn't really concern me.

In the last couple months, however, he stopped using a significant number of words that he used to say. He now says "this" for everything, as if he wants me to say it. His receptive language has really exploded...he understands pretty much everything we say, follows 2 step directions, and is just about starting to put phrases together (so far "where go dada" and other names). But he still will not identify anything. When we ask what something is, he just says "this".

Is this concerning? Is he just experimenting and wanting to hear the words? Or is this something we should talk to an EI person about? Should I be saying the words he wants me to say? I know they learn by listening, but I also know sometimes parents can enable kids to not use words that they are capable of using because we know what they want, and I don't want to fall into that camp.

Any advice?

ETA: He is 22 months old, 21 months if you adjust for him being born early.
