@scg00387: @delight: That makes sense. I've thought about washing some of our toys, but it's just been easier to use baby wipes.

@shopaholic: oh they just dump the rattles and toys in a sink with hot water and disenfectant and then rinse everything.

We go to Books for Babies where we sing songs and read books. There are always a few songs where we use little maracas. Every child puts those in their mouth. Most kids try to grab the child's next to them and shove two in their mouth. The first week I was pretty squirmish about it and had visions of LO's first cold running through my head. Then I saw the teacher dump all the toys in the sink and now I don't care.

Neighbourhood play group is a whole other ball game. I guarantee no one disinfects after that. I think I'm the weird one that brings their own toys to group.

@birdofafeather: that is funny! Yeah, cold and flu season is another layer... I definitely discourage him from putting things in his mouth but there's only so much you can do.

@shopaholic: our library sprays stuff down with vinegar and water, I believe

At first this always freaked me out, but I've learned to let go a bit and let it happen. M is 12 mo now and goes to music class at the library once a month where they give the babies maracas. Of course, they go right in her mouth, but the instructor makes a point to say she always washes them after class. We also go to a play gym once a week and all the toys go straight in her mouth there too. I'm hoping this phase stops soon.

mmm... I'll admit I am grossed out by all the babies putting everything in the mouth at some playgroups I've been to. But I've stopped bringing our own toys because they get taken by other LOs. I think around 6-7 months I started feeling a little more lax about it, but I still try to wipe things down. I haven't been to a story time thing or play gym or anything like that yet.

@delight: How do they disinfect toys? Truly wondering since I haven't done much besides baby wiping our plastic toys.

@Smurfette: Yeah, I'm kind of a germophobe so it has definitely taken some getting used to. I figured it was normal for her to shove them all in her mouth but while she was doing it I saw a couple of other moms staring at her then I looked around and none of the other kids were doing it so I was confused!

@scg00387: she's working on walking, but like i said, i haven't been for a couple months and i haven't wiped them down before! that previous post made me sound like i've done it, but i was just pondering that for next time during cold/flu season?

oh, i forgot that the last time we went to a "concert" where they had maracas, R had one in her mouth and was having a blast when an older kiddo (maybe 3?) came up and saw her and tried to put his maraca in his mouth when his grandma yelled, "oh no, don't put that in your mouth, it's dirty!" i just laughed as my baby munched on her dirty maraca. oh well.

@Silva: Aside from the germ aspect I didn't know if it was appropriate since they aren't our toys? (Like if parents are thinking it's rude to let my LO get her slobber all over the library's toys?) But other than not letting her play with them I don't really know what else I can do.

I don't ever worry about it... But I'm kind of laid back about that kind of thing, and it's entirely possible other moms are thinking its gross...? But meh, it's good for their immune systems and it's just how they explore the world right now.

I took DD to story time at our local library for the first time today. Towards the end they brought out a bunch of toys and just let the LOs sit around and play. M immediately grabbed the toys and put them in her mouth (she is 4 1/2 months old and has been drooling like crazy so I think we're in the beginning stages of teething). She was the youngest baby there and the other babies/toddlers were all actually playing with the toys. I didn't see any of them putting them in their mouths.

So what is appropriate in this situation? Is it just assumed that babies are going to put stuff in their mouths and let her do it? Next time should I bring her winkel and Sophie from home and let her chew on those instead? Because they are the library's toys I am just not sure if I should let her go to town with them (I ended up not letting her chew on them and just let her grab them/waved them in front of her). What would you do?
