@LAZB: A lot of the products are sold a "wonder" items. Some completely new invention that will fix XXX. And its generally not true - although with everything of course there are exceptions. Many of the items are in markets with high cost of entry - so the DS route is the best way to go for the entrepreneur. It couples well with the selling approach "hey, I'm your friend, let me let you in on this amazing secret product I have discovered - but reach out to me in PM so we dont let everyone in on this amazing new thing"...

I'm not saying this applies to all companies who engage in DS, or all products. But in general, in my opinion, it covers the majority. We can agree to disagree thou - thankfully we all have that right!

Full disclosure -I have several accounts with DS companies for the purposes of buying my products at a discount. So I am very familiar with the DS industry, the training tactics, the business models, etc.

Also, I don’t know about other companies, but with Rodan + Fields the prices are right on the website, so no one is trying to hide anything

@Mrs D: I find that a bit harsh. Although the products might not be for everyone, I certainly don’t think that most of them are a scam. As far as the sales tactics go, it’s not for everyone, like I said I don’t approach things that way, but I wouldn’t call people slimy in general.

@LAZB: @Mrs D: Ok, that makes sense! I just couldn’t figure out why everything was so secretive! It’s a very off-putting vibe to me but maybe it works.

As @LAZB: said, they are trained to be vague about it to create interest and intrigue...to make you think its some special secret they have found. It gets you to take the next step (and contact them)...its all about keeping you intrigued and interested to keep asking more...

Then you find out the prices. The fact that most of the products are 1) a scam or 2) no different than what you can buy at a store. If you could google the name and find out a disqualifying piece of information (ie mandatory re-order, price point, chemicals, etc) they lose you. The longer they keep you interested without giving away the farm the better.

Its so slimy.

@Madison43: yeah, that’s definitely my style. I just post about the deals I think are really good, and offer specials every so often. I don’t make the big bucks this way, but I can’t do it differently

They don’t tell you because they want to create “intrigue”. I sell Rodan and fields, but I have never used that method because it feels so disingenuous to me. I honestly just sell for the discount and because I really like some of the products.

I had a friend do this with some supplement she was selling .... I actually listened to her whole pitch (a 30 min phone call) and the name of the product was basically a state secret until she sent me some follow up materials for me to review before our “next” informational call  Some googling revealed that the supplements were like $500/month. I assume that’s why they don’t tell you up front? Bc if you could figure out how much it cost before sitting through the sales pitch, no one ever would.

YES! I was just added to a group by a coworker as I noticed that she lost weight and complimented her on it. We've talked about this type of stuff before so it wasn't weird. :) No idea what it is but I want nothing to do with it.

I don’t even know where to put this but I’m wondering if anyone here has experience they can use to enlighten me...I’ve had quite a few Facebook friends post about various things they are selling but why is it the ones that are/could be health related (I’m specifically thinking of some Keto drink but probably there are others) they will not name the product and they just reply to everyone saying “I’ll pm you!” It totally makes it sound cult like the way they gush about it but won’t give specifics and I’m so curious why that is!
