I pumped every missed feed.

For certain outings, like a wedding, I excused myself and pumped in the car for 15-20 minutes, then returned back to the reception. I often pumped while driving and I also pumped during long car trips when DH was driving (like when DS had a doctors appointment far away and I knew he wouldn't nurse well). I also had a hand pump I kept on hand for a quick impromptu pumping session or for when I didn't bring my electric pump (didn't think I would need it but errand took longer than expected etc).

I would add that if your LO nurses as soon as you're back, I'd pump after she's done to make up for the missed session. You'll probably have more than one feeding's worth in there by the time you're back.

Thanks everyone! As I imagined, the answer seems to be, it depends.

I guess for the odd outing here or there it would really be essentially the same thing as if she took a really long nap one day. I have a portable single pump so maybe I'll just throw that in my bag if necessary. We live in an urban area so rarely drive on social outings.

I was always really protective of my supply so I didn't ever go three hours (except at night) without pumping. I bought a car adapter for my pump and basically took it everywhere. There were plenty of date nights that between dinner and a movie I was pumping.

I went to a movie and dinner recently, and was gone about 4.5 hrs. I nursed before I left and as soon as I got back, but I had to pump off about 1.5 ounces in between the movie/dinner because I was getting engorged.
My LO is 3 months, and eating pretty frequently still. I brought my manual and just quickly pumped in the bathroom,

if i'm going to be away from LO for a few hours and one of his feedings occur during the time i'm gone (and i can't pump wherever i am), i'll usually try to pump right before i go to try and make up for the lost session and empty my breasts. i could also do it afterwards, but i prefer to do it before to prevent engorgement, and also because if i do it when i come back, i worry that my supply won't "recharge" enough for the next nursing session.

if it's something longer like a wedding, i would probably pump at some point during the wedding. on the other hand, i know my friend was at an all-afternoon/evening bridal shower and bachelorette where pumping was not an option, so at some point in the evening the hand expressed her milk into the toilet. i know, not such a great image, but you do what you gotta do!

I've skipped a pump here and there without it affecting my supply. But I always try my best to pump for a missed nursing session.

Depending on how long you will be gone, maybe you could pump right before you leave and right when you get home (unless you nurse as soon as you get home).

I regularly go 5 hours between pumping (because of my weird pumping schedule at work) whereas Xander only goes 3 hours between eating. So it really depends on how much milk your breasts can hold.

And if it's just once in a while that you're missing a session, it's probably not a huge deal to just skip it. Though it depends on how engorged you get.

I recently went to a bridal shower and I knew I wouldn't really be able to pump there, but I was going to be gone for 5+ hours, so I brought my manual pump and just pumped a few ounces in the bathroom to relieve the engorgement. Then I nursed (or pumped, I forget) as soon as I got home. I also nursed right before I left.

It just depends on the situation. Sometimes I would pump, sometimes I would skip it.

If you have no supply issues, skipping a session now and again isn't necessarily a huge deal, as long as it doesn't become a habit.

For me, I've always had supply issues so skipping sessions in the early days might have contributed to never being able to bring in a full supply. Once I realized that I was very protective of missed sessions and adamant about staying on a schedule so my milk supply would be okay. You are 8 weeks into BFing already, so your supply is probably well established at this point.

LO is 8 weeks, and I've started to have short periods of time away from her. I always leave a bottle but if I'm gone for two hours or less, she rarely takes it. My question is about logistics for longer outings where I won't be easily able to pump. Do you all pump for every missed feed?

Of course when I go back to work, I'll be pumping for those feeds. But for something like dinner and a movie out with SO, or a wedding or something, what do you do? Is there a length of time you go by? She usually wants to nurse as soon as we're back together, so when would I pump?

I do regularly pump one side in the AM and after she goes to bed (sometimes), so I typically pump 2-4 ounces a day that she doesn't drink. She takes 3 ounces in a bottle.

Thanks for any thoughts you have, I hope the question makes sense!
