I exclusively breastfed and did not give any drops and still don't at 17 months (any tests that D S has had have been perfect). My midwife said if I keep my levels up, my milk will keep his up! I eat a lot of red meat though since we are beef farmers so my iron levels aren't lacking, in fact I get many comments about how solid the levels are (I'm pregnant again so my midwife has tested 3 times in the last 7 months). I would say to really watch your diet and then don't worry too much. As far as purees, he will likely come around. We did baby led weaning and that really took off around 7-8 months.

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: I agree with @locavore_mama. It sounds like maybe you need to find a new pediatrician if your approach to your child's health doesn't jive with his. If you lean towards a more natural approach you might check Dr. Sears website for a national list of pediatricians who practice this way.

Our pediatrician was completely comfortable and even encouraging regarding our non-traditional vaccine schedule, does not recommend flouride supplements, and was very supportive of my EBFing.

We don't give vitamin D drops to DD, but I take them myself and I make sure she gets sunlight often.

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: it really sounds like your parenting in regards to medical care does not jive with your pediatrician. I would perhaps consider finding one that does.

My LO is on child health plus which most assume is Medicaid but it's not. Anyway it is state provided insurance and my pediatrician has never looked down at us. We ask questions about everything. We come informed about everything and therefore question everything. He does not get offended but realizes it just means we care a lot and are educated enough to find information and alternatives. just because someone has a medical degree does not mean they are always right.

We never did any vitamins either. LO had slightly low iron at her 12 month check but the doctor wasn't too concerned. We've tried to up high iron foods and I feel fine about it.

@sarahbee: I would be careful on giving iron if it's not necessary. There is such a thing as overdosing on iron. My LO was severely anemic and we had to be careful about how gave her and weaned her off iron supplements when her levels were at a satisfactory point.

Mine had an "eh" attitude towards purees at 6 months too! I was so excited to start solids, and figured it would ease some of the stress on me (because EBF can be stressful!)... but, no, he wasn't that into food (cue more stress)! It got better by 7 or so months, although he was never that big on purees. Baby lead weaning (BLW) was more his speed and now, at 9 months, he's eating well although we still have good meals and bad.

As for the vitamins, our ped is into vitamin D from birth and then iron starting at 6 months. But after talking to other moms, it seems peds are all over the place in terms of their suggestions. I gave D and iron very infrequently...

Yeah, we were doing the Vitamin D drops, but they were only Vitamin D drops, so no iron or anything. We probably stopped those around two months ago, but I think I'm going to start him back on those - they were only Vitamin D + olive or coconut oil, so no artificial dyes or flavors.

Re: the doctor, I wasn't really sure what to expect. He's okay, otherwise, but I sort of feel like he looks at us lowly. We're on welfare programs for the first time and LO's insurance is through access, so while I could be completely wrong and just feeling self conscious, I feel like he sees us as uneducated. . _____ . I'm very FTM about things, but I've always been skeptical of certain things and question my medical caregivers, but I think he may take it personally almost. I tend to get really anxious about it - I mean, can your pediatrician do something like call CPS on someone for not wanting to do standard practices for their baby? I know there are some anti-vax mothers, but I don't recall stories about that, so I wouldn't think choosing a different way to get your kid vitamins would be a big deal, but I catastrophise, haha!

We did vitamin d drops daily until she turned two. Honestly though, the past three months or so (from about 19 months on) I've been inconsistent and kept forgetting. I've started her on a gummy multivitamin now that she's two , but she doesn't seem to like them much.

I worried a lot about iron because she didn't eat a lot of red meat and I didn't do any infant cereal. Got her tested around a year and her iron levels were fine. I think she was eating lots of other iron containing foods so she was okay.

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: We did do the vitamin d drops regularly as I EBF the whole first year. They checked LO for iron as part of the routine at her 9 mo checkup and she came out a little low. All they did was give us a list of iron rich foods and encouraged us to try to incorporate them and then rechecked at 12 months. She was fine. The biggest thing we did was oatmeal for breakfast every morning, which seemed like the easiest non-meat way to get more iron in her diet.

I guess my point is that doing the drops is not a guarantee--maybe it would have been worse without them. If your doctor has a real problem with it, he/she might not be the best fit for you?

I would say to the people who tell you that food makes you sleep through the night that STTN is a neurological development and not a nutritionally-dependent one. Would that help?

Thanks! I think the vitamins he wanted him to take were in liquid form. TriViSol I think? Between the vitamins and my hesitation on fluoride supplements the pediatrician is really not happy with us. I feel like I'm going to the principles office everytime we have an appointment lol

Completely normal!

Most vitamins in pill or or gummy form are not recommended for 2 and under. So I think he's fine. We live in a low sun City and our doctor doesn't require vitamin d drops and I specifically asked. At your 9 or 12m appt your ped will test for iron levels.
Iron levels from birth are stored around 9m and start depleting around then. I think that's also why 9m coincides with a good time to introduce meat.

So LO turned 6 months on Valentine's Day and we had started offering purees to him a couple days before. He's interested in food, but not really big on eating the purees. I think it may be a texture thing, so we're going to try out some different things, but, overall, I'm offering and letting him taste things and explore and generally trying not to stress about it. I'm still nursing on demand and he nurses about every 3 hours.

Can I first just get some reassurance that his 'eh' attitude isn't anything to be concerned about? I've read about a dozen times that it isn't, babies are all different, he doesn't have an automatic "YEAH SOLIDS!" switch, blah blah, but when I get the concerned opinions of friends and the "well, my babies slept through the night after we gave him rice cereal in their bottles, have you tried that??" speech from family, I could use a "Nah, he's fine" opinion to off set it :P

Also, when he was first born, we opted to not give him the vitamins that the pediatrician was adamant about. We ordered the Carson (I think that was the name) Vitamin D drops but have since stopped giving those (lost them when we were out and about, whoops). When the doctor asked about them at our last appointment he was very, uh, not happy?, about us not giving them to him. I know I've read that his iron stores start depleting around this time and I'm an anemic who frequently forgets to take her own supplements, so how do those of you who decided not to give the over-the-count vitamins handle this time? I figured I'd just try and offer him lots of diverse, iron-rich foods. If necessary, I'll try and find some vitamin drops that don't include dyes and HFCS, which was our concern initially.

Thoughts?
