@csross217 you'll have a blast no matter what. DH and I went to a different wedding in Mexico this past Nov 2014 and two other couples with us were pregnant. Both women were 5-6 months along and they had a blast. Mostly laughing at all of us :)

@gallirask: Thanks for sharing! It is a huge decision to make, and I'm definitely feeling a little bit of the selfish aspect, honestly for wanting to be able to party it up with DH and family while vacationing. But in the long run, TTC and starting a family is way more important to us, and I'll still be able to enjoy a few virgin pina coladas :)

I've been wondering about this too. Friends of ours just picked to have a destination wedding in DR in Nov 2015. We have been TTC for a few months now but was feeling "selfish" about not wanting to be prego during a friend vacation. But also don't want to wait any longer because that will be another year before we start TTC again! We are going to keep TTC for now, and then stop late summer early fall to avoid traveling in the 1st tri.

Good luck to you!!! I started trying at what would be the perfect time for work to have a baby. Took a while, and now if all goes well will be having baby at worst time possible for work... Grrrrrrr! But since then by perspective has changed, and I now think the perfect time to have a baby is any time I can have a healthy baby. Travel can be moved, work will have to accommodate, etc. you can still go on fun vacations after kids. DH and I still plan to :)

@MrsBananaGrabber: That make sense! Our plan right now is to TTC from about July-October, and then put it on hold until after the trip just in case I have a miserable 1st trimester.

I think it would be great to be on your family vacation during your second trimester, if possible. Lots of people intentionally take vacations then as "babymoons."

I'd try not to time things such that I was traveling during the 1st or 3rd trimester however. Early 3rd might be ok, but at a certain point your doctor won't want you to travel. A lot of people say traveling during your 1st trimester is perfectly fine (including my doctor) and tons of people do it, but I'm 10 weeks right now and there's no way I'd enjoy a vacation. Since you don't know how you'll feel, just keep in mind that there's a risk of extreme nausea and/or fatigue that could spoil your vacation.

@NurseDMB: @mrscobee: Thanks for the advice!!!

We've definitely decided to do it. We're ready to TTC and if it happens before our trip, it'll double as a babymoon! Now the countdown is on until we start TTC in July... :)

I would try if you are ready. Buy travel insurance in case you get KU right away. But on the flip side you never know how long it will take, etc. Also, many women don't get bad morning sickness at all, so you could still have fun or worst case scenario cancel.

I traveled in my first tri to St Lucia and it was miserable! It was right when the nausea and constant exhaustion was hitting (I was 6 weeks). And I was nervous over every little thing. But I would definitely travel during the second trimester.

@csross217: life definitely changes once LO arrives, but it isn't selfish to think about the things that will change! Try to get in as much as you can beforehand and while life is different after LO arrives, it is just as awesome but in a completely different way!

We're going on a cruise when I'm around 20 weeks this time, and I'm looking forward to it! I agree with PP, as long as you make sure to time the TTC so that you won't be too far along (airlines will sometimes have restrictions on that, so I'd get official permission from your doctor to take with you just in case) I think it'd be fun! I would get insurance for it or something, if possible, in case you wind up on bedrest or can't go for some other reason.

@csross217: I totally understand that. It wasn't until my friend mentioned that "big picture" thing that I realized how selfishly I was thinking (especially since DH and I hadn't even fully discussed things yet...I was just assuming)

@csross217: I know a lot of people say don't let TTC get in the way of life. It took us two years to get pregnant. That being said, I wouldn't plan things in between the 30ish week and EDD for each cycle (if that makes sense). So, if this cycle had my due in October, I wouldn't plan anything beyond the end of August.

@blackbird: @psw27: @MaryM: Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the insight.... One things I've struggled with while we're thinking about TTC is that I feel selfish. I keep thinking, "if we have a baby, my life is going to change and I can't do ___ anymore!" (taking trips, spontaneous date nights, etc.) I think I've felt that way a little bit about taking this trip, but in the big picture of life, having children is way more important.

@LindsayInNY: That was kinda my thought process.... TTC during mid- to late-summer/early fall and then stop for a bit so if we do get a BFP, I won't be in my first tri while travelling.

If you know vacation would be January or February, I would TTC and just avoid TTC during whatever months would give you a due date then or prevent you from traveling, if that makes sense. I would have no issues vacationing pregnant though.

I didn't have this question in relation to traveling, but I did consider it in relation to grad school.

When I first started thinking about going to school (2 years ago) I mentioned to someone that I was thinking I'd put off TTC until I finished school because I was afraid if I had to take a break, I wouldn't go back and finish.

She told me to look at the big picture. In life...what is really the bigger deal? Creating a life, or getting a master's? (different people might have different answers, and that's perfectly fine)

That pretty much sealed the deal for me. I got KU (but miscarried) halfway through my program, but while I was pregnant, came up with an acceptable way to take a semester off and still finish in a decent amount of time.

Even after the MC, I realized that you never know how long it will take to get KU or what might happen along that journey, and it was pretty clear to me that having a baby was more important than most other things. So I don't want to put that on hold because of "what ifs"

I've also been planning to go to Ireland with my mom when I graduate. I'm still planning to go...whether we get KU or not. But we're just waiting until about March to buy tickets and make solid plans

I think a vacation while pregnant sounds lovely  I went on a babymoon to the USVI and I loved floating in the ocean and swimming while pregnant. I would go for it if you are ready, you never know how long it might take!

Hi all! This is my first post, though I've been a long-time board stalker  . I have a question about timing around TTC/vacations...

A little background - DH and I have been together for 6 years, married for 1.5. He's 30 and I'm 27. He's been ready for a baby since the day we got married, and it started for me about a year ago. For the last few months though, I've been going absolutely baby crazy! This coming from a girl who never had any interaction with babies growing up and until a few years ago swore she would never, ever reproduce.

My DH and I are planning to take a family vacation next Jan-Feb 2016 (probably Mexico). Originally, we were going to TTC after the vacation, but now we aren't sure that we want to wait that long! I'd really like to have a spring baby, so theoretically we'd like to get a BFP around July/August. Is it crazy to think about TTC this summer, and be pregnant during the vacation?? If we wait, it'll be another year from now before we start trying!!!

What are your thoughts on waiting vs. TTC this summer and possibly being preggo on vacation?
